multi-agent-auth

multi-agent-auth is a skill for Claude Code from catpilotai/catpilot-ai-guardrails. It costs 39 tokens per session (1,174 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A security design for messages and delegation between software agents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to authenticate agent-to-agent requests, restrict allowed targets and tools, verify message origins, and limit delegation depth.
Why use it?
It prevents unauthenticated calls, messages from unknown agents, privilege increases during delegation, and uncontrolled delegation loops.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00039 $0.01174
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00470
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00235
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00117

Security

Grade B, and why

multi-agent-auth scanned grade B with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

A POST to an outside endpoint may be telemetry or may be exfiltration; either way the mod talks to somewhere, and you should know where.

Baseline

Applies when: Designing or running multi-agent workflows where agents wake, message, or delegate tasks to other agents or sub-agents.

Always:

  • Authenticate every inter-agent RPC or webhook call with a verified bearer token and bind local listeners to 127.0.0.1, never 0.0.0.0.
  • Restrict each agent to an explicit allowedAgentIds target list (never "*") and a fixed least-privilege toolset.
  • Enforce non-escalation on delegation: an agent may only delegate to a target whose allowed_tools is a subset of the caller's allowed_tools, and the target always executes under its own fixed permissions.
  • Attach and verify message provenance metadata (provenance.kind = "inter_session" and verified source_agent) so agents never confuse inter-agent messages with direct human instructions.
  • Cap delegation chain depth (e.g., max_chain_depth = 5) and maxPingPongTurns, and pass a machine-checkable constraint ledger across delegation hops so requirements are not lost via paraphrase.

Never:

  • Allow unauthenticated agent-to-agent wake calls or wildcard "*" target-agent permissions.
  • Let a sub-agent inherit its caller's privileged tools or let an unprivileged agent delegate a task to a more privileged agent to bypass tool restrictions.
  • Blindly execute shell commands or destructive operations requested inside an inter-agent message without independent validation.

Open the full component before acting: it has the examples, the remediation steps, and the detection patterns.

Why

In a multi-agent system, a read-only agent that ingests untrusted web pages or emails is exposed to prompt injection. If that read-only agent can wake or delegate work to an admin or coding agent with shell access ("confused deputy"), an attacker compromises the entire fleet through the least-privileged agent. Furthermore, multi-hop delegation compresses constraints at each hop unless original invariants are carried forward explicitly.

When to apply

Apply this component whenever multiple agents or sub-agents coordinate via queues, HTTP hooks, shared state, or SDK handoffs.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

multi-agent-auth is a skill published in the GitHub repository catpilotai/catpilot-ai-guardrails (2 stars, last pushed 8d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 39 tokens to every session and 1,174 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it B with 2 findings (sends data to an external url, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-29.
