event-design

event-design is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ccashwell/evm-cortex. It costs 48 tokens per session (1,366 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to designing Solidity events before implementing contract logic. Events are records emitted on the blockchain so tools such as The Graph and Dune can find and organize contract activity.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when designing events for deposits, withdrawals, fees, strategy changes, and other contract actions.
Why use it?
It helps off-chain indexers track state changes and filter important fields while keeping event data and gas costs considered.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00048 $0.01366
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00546
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00273
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00137

Security

Grade A, and why

event-design scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Event Design

Design Contracts Event-First

Events are the primary interface between onchain state and offchain systems. Design events before writing contract logic. Every state-changing function should emit at least one event.

// Define events FIRST, then build the contract around them
interface IVaultEvents {
    event Deposited(address indexed user, address indexed token, uint256 amount, uint256 shares);
    event Withdrawn(address indexed user, address indexed token, uint256 amount, uint256 shares);
    event FeeCollected(address indexed collector, uint256 amount);
    event StrategyUpdated(address indexed oldStrategy, address indexed newStrategy);
    event EmergencyShutdown(address indexed triggeredBy, uint256 timestamp);
}

Indexed Parameters

  • Max 3 indexed parameters per event (4 for anonymous events)
  • Indexed parameters become log topics — filterable by indexers
  • Non-indexed parameters go in the data section — cheaper, not filterable
  • Value types (address, uint, bool, bytes32) are stored directly as topics
  • Reference types (string, bytes, arrays) are stored as their keccak256 hash when indexed
// GOOD: key actors indexed for filtering, amounts in data for reading
event Transfer(address indexed from, address indexed to, uint256 amount);

// GOOD: token indexed for per-token queries
event Swap(
    address indexed sender,
    address indexed tokenIn,
    address indexed tokenOut,
    uint256 amountIn,
    uint256 amountOut,
    uint256 fee
);

// BAD: indexing a string hashes it — you can't read the original value from the topic
event NameChanged(string indexed name); // topic = keccak256(name), not the string

What to Index

Parameter Index? Reason
User/sender address Yes Filter by user
Token address Yes Filter by token
Pool/vault ID Yes Filter by pool
Amounts No Read from data, not filtered
Timestamps No Block timestamp available anyway
Strings/bytes No Indexed = hashed = unreadable

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

event-design is a skill published in the GitHub repository ccashwell/evm-cortex (131 stars, last pushed 17d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 48 tokens to every session and 1,366 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
