principle-type-system-discipline

principle-type-system-discipline is a skill for Claude Code from chhoumann/t3-pstack. It costs 60 tokens per session (801 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of principle-type-system-discipline, MIT.

A programming principle for using types to prevent invalid data and incomplete cases. It recommends representing meaningful alternatives directly, checking outside data at system boundaries, and letting the compiler catch mismatches.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when designing data models, reviewing function inputs and outputs, handling variants, or converting external data into trusted internal values.
Why use it?
It reduces runtime checks and contradictory combinations that the program should never accept. It also makes changes safer in languages with static type checking, such as TypeScript, Java, or C#.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00060 $0.00801
Opus 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00320
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00160
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00080

Security

Grade A, and why

principle-type-system-discipline scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Type System Discipline

Make the compiler reject impossible states, mismatched primitives, and unhandled variants. Prefer defining errors and special cases out of existence over proliferating handlers. For TypeScript syntax, see the typescript-best-practices skill.

  • Make illegal states unrepresentable. Model variants as sum types (discriminated unions, enums with payloads, sealed classes), not as a bag of optional fields where contradictory combinations compile. { completed: boolean; completedAt?: Date } admits completed: true with no date. Derive the boolean from completedAt, or model { kind: 'open' } | { kind: 'done'; at: Date }. If you can write a comment explaining when a combination of fields is valid, split it into a sum type.
  • Types are constructions, not restrictions. Build the type up from the values you want instead of carving them out of a looser type with checks. A non-empty list is a head plus a rest. A valid time range is a start plus a duration. Choose the shape that cannot build the illegal value and expose the interface callers need on top.
  • Brand semantic primitives. UserId and OrderId are strings underneath but should not be interchangeable. Give each its own type, such as a branded intersection in TypeScript or a newtype elsewhere. Validate once at creation, trust the type downstream. If two arguments share a primitive type but mean different things, brand them.
  • External data is untyped until parsed. RPC payloads, JSON, IPC messages, CLI args, config files, environment variables, database rows. Have a parse function at every boundary that turns unstructured input into the typed model. The boundary-discipline principle skill says where to put validation.
  • Don't lie to the type system. Casts, unsafe coercions, and assertion functions that bypass the compiler are latent runtime crashes. If the compiler can't prove a fact, prove it (validate, narrow, refine the model) or accept that the cast is a hazard. Trace each any, as, or assertNotNull to the boundary and validate there.
  • Exhaustive matching is the compiler's job. A match on a sum type must fail compilation when a new variant is added without handling, so the compiler tells the next agent where to add a case. Use your language's idiom: a never-typed binding in TypeScript, an unannotated match in Rust, -Wincomplete-patterns in Haskell, sealed-class match exhaustiveness in Kotlin.
  • Derive types from authoritative schemas. When a protocol buffer, OpenAPI spec, GraphQL schema, database migration, design-token file, or another file owns a shape, derive from it instead of hand-rolling a parallel type. See the encode-lessons-in-structure principle skill.
  • Strengthen a type only where partiality appears. A runtime assertion, null check, or "this should never happen" throw marks the place a type is too weak. Push that check up into the type. Then stop. The type system's job is to track the cases each use site must handle, not to describe the data as precisely as possible. Prefer total functions. sum of an empty list is 0, so it takes the plain list. head of an empty list has no answer, so it demands the non-empty one. If nothing would otherwise panic, keep the plain type.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

principle-type-system-discipline is a skill published in the GitHub repository chhoumann/t3-pstack (190 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 60 tokens to every session and 801 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. It is 86% identical to principle-type-system-discipline, differing in 9 lines, and is treated as a copy.
