Laws of UX Reference

Laws of UX Reference is a skill for Claude Code from ChrisMckerracher/claude-dream-team. It costs 46 tokens per session (2,026 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A reference guide to 30 user-experience principles, including rules about grouping, similarity, visual connections, and how people perceive interfaces.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when designing or reviewing interfaces, or when explaining why a layout, grouping, visual pattern, or interaction should work a certain way.
Why use it?
It gives designers and developers a shared explanation for interface decisions, helping them spot confusing groupings and inconsistent controls.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.02026
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.01013
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00405
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00203

Security

Grade A, and why

Laws of UX Reference scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Laws of UX - Complete Reference

A comprehensive reference of UX principles for making informed design decisions. When designing or reviewing UI, reference the relevant laws to justify choices.

Gestalt Principles (Visual Perception)

Law of Proximity

Objects near each other are perceived as a group.

  • Application: Group related form fields, buttons, and information
  • Anti-pattern: Unrelated items placed too close together
  • Test: Cover labels - can users still guess groupings?

Law of Similarity

Similar elements are perceived as a group.

  • Application: Use consistent styling for same-function elements
  • Anti-pattern: Buttons that look different but do similar things
  • Test: Can users identify all clickable elements at a glance?

Law of Common Region

Elements sharing a bounded area are perceived as grouped.

  • Application: Use cards, borders, or backgrounds to group content
  • Anti-pattern: Visual boundaries that split related content
  • Test: Remove all text - do the visual groups still make sense?

Law of Uniform Connectedness

Visually connected elements are perceived as related.

  • Application: Use lines, arrows, or shared colors to show relationships
  • Anti-pattern: Connected-looking elements that aren't related
  • Test: Can users trace the relationship between connected items?

Law of Pragnanz (Simplicity)

Ambiguous images are perceived in the simplest form.

  • Application: Favor clean, simple layouts over complex arrangements
  • Anti-pattern: Overly decorative designs that obscure content structure
  • Test: Can a new user understand the page in 5 seconds?

Cognitive & Memory Principles

Miller's Law

Working memory holds ~7 items (plus or minus 2).

  • Application: Limit nav items, options in dropdowns, steps in wizards
  • Anti-pattern: Menus with 15+ items, forms with 20+ fields on one page
  • Guideline: Max 7 items in any single group. Use progressive disclosure for more.

Chunking

Break information into meaningful groups.

  • Application: Phone numbers (555-123-4567), credit cards (4 groups of 4)
  • Anti-pattern: Long unbroken strings of numbers or text
  • Guideline: Group by meaning, not arbitrary length. 3-5 items per chunk.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
