ess-gh-copilot-review

ess-gh-copilot-review is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from CiscoDevNet/essentials. It costs 85 tokens per session (921 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A workflow that asks the GitHub Copilot command-line tool to review the current Git branch. It can compare the whole branch with the default branch or inspect only a selected range of commits, which are saved steps in the project's history.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review a branch, review changes since a chosen revision or the last review, reset the review marker, or select a specific comparison base.
Why use it?
It avoids manually constructing comparison ranges and provides a repeatable way to request a Copilot review. It can also limit a review to changes made since the previous successful review.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00085 $0.00921
Opus 5.5 $0.00034 $0.00368
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00184
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00092

Security

Grade A, and why

ess-gh-copilot-review scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/review-pr.sh, scripts/test_review_pr.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Review a Branch with GitHub Copilot CLI

Review the current branch against the remote's default branch using GitHub Copilot CLI.

Usage

Pass at most one scope option to the review script:

Option Reviews
(none) The whole branch against the remote's default branch
--since-last Only changes since the last successful review on this branch
--since <rev> Changes from <rev> to HEAD, e.g. --since HEAD~1
--range <range> An explicit range, e.g. --range HEAD~3..HEAD
--reset-last The whole branch, after clearing the last-reviewed marker

--since and --range need no remote fetch.

The remote is origin, or the only remote when there is no origin. Its default branch comes from refs/remotes/<remote>/HEAD (set by git clone), falling back to main, then master. Pass --base <ref> (e.g. --base upstream/develop) when there are several remotes and none is origin, or the base is some other branch. --base applies to the whole-branch review, including --since-last without a marker.

Prerequisites

Instructions

Run the bundled review script from inside the repository to review, outside any agent sandbox. Copilot CLI spawns subprocesses that need PTY access, which sandboxes block. SKILL_DIR is the absolute path of the directory that contains this SKILL.md; the script reviews whichever repo the current directory is in.

bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/review-pr.sh" [option]

The script runs copilot -p ... --allow-all (non-interactive, all tools auto-approved) so no manual confirmation is needed. Only use this in trusted repositories -- --allow-all permits Copilot to run shell commands and modify files without confirmation.

This will:

  1. Verify Copilot CLI is installed (exits with install instructions if not).
  2. Fetch the remote (only for the whole-branch review) and show a diff stat for the selected range.
  3. Run a non-interactive Copilot CLI review that checks for correctness issues, edge cases, security concerns, missing tests, performance problems, and maintainability issues.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
