What is observability?

An engineering approach for understanding whether a running system is healthy by collecting logs, traces, and measurements. It covers OpenTelemetry, a common way to collect and pass this information between services, as well as service targets and alerts.

Use it to add or review logs, distributed traces, metrics, context passing, sampling, and telemetry collection. It helps define service indicators, objectives, error budgets, burn-rate alerts, and tests for instrumentation.

It helps teams find problems through symptoms and decide when a service is falling short of its reliability target. It also reduces confusing, incomplete, or unsafe telemetry and checks that instrumentation works as intended.
