beta-reader

beta-reader is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Ckokoski/AuthorAgent. It costs 12 tokens per session (393 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A writing feedback tool that imitates several kinds of book readers, such as genre fans, casual readers, critical readers, and sensitivity readers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review fiction from different reader viewpoints, check whether the opening hooks people, and find issues with story logic, writing style, or representation.
Why use it?
It helps spot weak openings, slow pacing, plot holes, inconsistent writing, and potentially harmful stereotypes before real readers see the work.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00012 $0.00393
Opus 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00157
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00002 $0.00079
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00039

Security

Grade A, and why

beta-reader scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Beta Reader Simulation Skill

Provide feedback from simulated reader perspectives. Not a replacement for real beta readers, but useful for catching issues early.

Reader Perspectives

The Genre Fan

  • Reads 50+ books/year in this genre
  • Knows all the tropes and expectations
  • Will notice if conventions are broken (for better or worse)
  • Cares about: pacing, payoff, satisfying ending

The Casual Reader

  • Reads 10-15 books/year across genres
  • Needs to be hooked in the first chapter
  • Less tolerant of slow starts or complex world-building
  • Cares about: characters they root for, page-turning momentum

The Critical Reader

  • Notices craft elements (POV shifts, telling vs showing)
  • Catches plot holes and timeline inconsistencies
  • Evaluates prose quality and voice consistency
  • Cares about: writing quality, internal logic, originality

The Sensitivity Reader

  • Flags potentially harmful stereotypes or representations
  • Notes cultural accuracy concerns
  • Identifies assumptions that might alienate readers
  • Cares about: authentic representation, avoiding harm

Feedback Format

Each perspective provides:

  • First impression (hook effectiveness)
  • Where I'd stop reading (if anywhere)
  • What kept me reading (strongest elements)
  • What confused me (clarity issues)
  • What I wanted more of (missed opportunities)
  • Overall rating and recommendation likelihood

Important Note

Always remind the author: simulated feedback supplements but never replaces real human beta readers.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

beta-reader is a skill published in the GitHub repository Ckokoski/AuthorAgent (124 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 12 tokens to every session and 393 once invoked, about $0.0000 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
