create-release

create-release is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from cocoindex-io/cocoindex. It costs 155 tokens per session (4,725 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A release procedure for CocoIndex, a software project that publishes Python packages and documentation. It uses semantic versioning, where version numbers describe the size of a change, and GitHub Releases to start publishing.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps choose the next version, write notes from commits, create the GitHub release, and monitor package and documentation publishing.
Why use it?
It avoids publishing a package without release notes or a matching GitHub release. It also checks the release workflow as it builds packages, uploads them to PyPI, and deploys the documentation.

About the project

CocoIndex is an incremental data-processing engine that keeps code, documents, messages, PDFs, and videos continuously updated as context for AI agents and language-model applications. Engineers use it to build declarative Python pipelines that process only changed data, and its catalogue skills help coding agents work with CocoIndex correctly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00155 $0.04725
Opus 5.5 $0.00062 $0.01890
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00031 $0.00945
Haiku 4.5 $0.00015 $0.00473

Security

Grade A, and why

create-release scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/collect_changes.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Create a CocoIndex Release

How a release works here

Publishing a GitHub release whose tag doesn't exist yet creates the v<version> tag on the release's target commit. That tag push starts .github/workflows/release.yml, which:

  1. stamps the version from the tag into Cargo.toml, pyproject.toml and python/cocoindex/_version.py (.github/scripts/update_version.py). The checked-in versions stay placeholders (999.0.0, dynamic), so a release needs no version-bump commit;
  2. builds the wheels (abi3 and free-threaded, every platform) and the sdist, and smoke-tests them;
  3. uploads them to PyPI, then deploys the docs when the release is the repository's "Latest" one (the Docs Gate job).

So publishing the GitHub release is the one action that ships everything. Don't git tag and git push instead: that ships to PyPI with no release entry and no notes. And publishing can't be taken back — PyPI never accepts the same version twice — so the release is drafted first, shown to the user, and published only on their go-ahead.

A minor or major release is cut from main. A patch release is cut from the minor's release branch, release/<X.Y>, which starts at the minor's tag and takes only backports (dev/agent-skills/backport/SKILL.md says what qualifies and how one lands; AGENTS.md, Versioning, is the policy). The docs site shows the docs of the latest release, so a patch of an older minor is published with --latest=false (step 5) and deploys no docs.

Needs gh authenticated with push access to cocoindex-io/cocoindex. The commands below use placeholders: <branch> (main or release/1.1), <prev_tag> (e.g. v1.0.26), <sha> (full commit SHA), <version> (e.g. 1.1.0) and <tag> (v<version>).

1. Pin the branch, the commit and the previous release

git fetch origin --tags
git rev-parse origin/<branch>                              # <sha>
git describe --tags --abbrev=0 --match 'v[0-9]*' <sha> # <prev_tag>: the newest release tag the commit descends from
git log --oneline <prev_tag>..<sha>

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

create-release is a skill published in the GitHub repository cocoindex-io/cocoindex (11,827 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 155 tokens to every session and 4,725 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-31.
