cast-ask-team

cast-ask-team is a skill for Claude Code from codecast-sh/codecast. It costs 74 tokens per session (398 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for asking a team question in a shared channel, putting the current session on hold, and continuing when an answer arrives. It includes context and a fallback choice so the question does not block unrelated work.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to ask a teammate about a design or requirement, provide the needed context, wait for a reply, and resume the task when the answer arrives.
Why use it?
Questions aimed at someone outside the current conversation can leave coding stalled while waiting. This sends the question to the team and parks only the work that depends on the answer.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00074 $0.00398
Opus 5.5 $0.00030 $0.00159
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00080
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00040

Security

Grade A, and why

cast-ask-team scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

A question parked in prose stalls the session until someone happens to read the thread. A question in the team channel reaches the person who can answer it, and the session sleeps in the meantime.

Ask once, completely

cast chat channels
cast chat send --channel <id> - <<'MSG'
@<handle or nobody> <the question in one sentence>
Context: <what you found, in two lines, so nobody has to open the session>
Options: <A, B, or the default you will take if nobody answers by <time>>
Session: @<this session's short id>
MSG

Mention a person only when the question is theirs; a bare question reaches whoever reads the channel. Mentioning this session's short id means a reply on the thread is delivered here as a session message, which is the wake.

Park

Pin cast state --status dormant naming the thread as the wake, and keep working on everything that does not depend on the answer. When nothing else can proceed, end the turn.

If a default is safe to reverse, arm a fallback so silence does not stall the work: cast trigger add "<take the default and note it in the thread>" --in <time>.

Resume

When the reply lands: act on it, reply on the same thread with what was done in one line, and cancel the fallback trigger if one was armed.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cast-ask-team is a skill published in the GitHub repository codecast-sh/codecast (40 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 74 tokens to every session and 398 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-15.
