node-express-security

node-express-security is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from coldtatooine/vuln-skill-pack. It costs 57 tokens per session (1,075 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A security review guide for Node.js web APIs, including Express and similar frameworks such as Fastify, Koa, and NestJS. It focuses on checking who can access each route and what they are allowed to do.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it while building, reviewing, or shipping a REST API to check authentication, permissions, CORS, cookies, proxy settings, and unsafe input handling.
Why use it?
It helps catch common API security mistakes, such as broken login checks, users accessing other users’ records, unsafe JWT handling, and injection risks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00057 $0.01075
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00537
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00215
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00108

Security

Grade A, and why

node-express-security scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Runs shell commandslowCapability

Expected in a hook, worth knowing in a rule or an instructions file.

- **Command**: avoid `child_process.exec` with user input; use `execFile`/`spawn` with an argument array and no shell.

Node.js & Express API Security Footguns

Apply when the app is a Node/Express (or similar: Fastify, Koa, NestJS) REST API. Pair with /scan, /preflight, /secrets.

Verify before flagging

  • A route is only "missing auth" if it is reachable without the auth middleware in the mount chain — trace order before flagging.
  • cors({ origin: '*' }) without credentials is often intentional for public APIs; BLOCK when combined with credentials or reflected unchecked Origin.
  • JWT decode used for non-auth display is not a finding; flag when it gates access.
  • Cookie/trust proxy issues matter when sessions or secure cookies are actually used behind a reverse proxy.

1. Authentication & authorization

  • Auth middleware must actually be applied to every protected route. A route registered before/outside the app.use(auth) line, or a router mounted without it, is public. Trace the middleware order.
  • Authentication ≠ authorization. Verifying a valid token proves who, not whether they may. Check role/ownership per route.
  • IDOR is the #1 API hole: GET /users/:id / DELETE /orders/:id must verify the token's user owns/may access that object — not just that the token is valid. Never look up by the path ID alone.

2. JWT pitfalls

  • Verify, don't decode. jwt.verify(token, secret) — never jwt.decode() for auth (it doesn't check the signature).
  • Pin the algorithm: { algorithms: ['HS256'] }. Accepting alg: none or allowing RS256↔HS256 confusion lets attackers forge tokens.
  • Strong, secret signing key (not a default/committed value). Check exp. Have a revocation story for logout/compromise.

3. CORS

  • cors({ origin: '*', credentials: true }) is invalid and dangerous — with credentials, reflect a strict allowlist of origins, never *.
  • Don't reflect the incoming Origin header unchecked.

4. Injection

  • SQL/NoSQL: parameterized queries / prepared statements only. Never string-concatenate user input. For Mongo, guard against operator injection ({ $gt: '' }) by validating/casting types.
  • Command: avoid child_process.exec with user input; use execFile/spawn with an argument array and no shell.
  • Path traversal: user-supplied filenames into fs/path.join → normalize and confine to a base dir; reject ...

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

node-express-security is a skill published in the GitHub repository coldtatooine/vuln-skill-pack (2 stars, last pushed 10d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 57 tokens to every session and 1,075 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (runs shell commands). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
