to-brief

to-brief is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from control-decks/think-it-through. It costs 49 tokens per session (489 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command that turns a conversation or an agent result into a neutral, reusable Markdown thinking brief. Markdown is plain text with simple formatting that can be saved or shared as a document.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to capture decisions, reasoning, or open questions as a reusable brief, either returned in the conversation or prepared for an explicitly chosen destination.
Why use it?
It preserves useful reasoning in a portable form without silently creating or overwriting a lasting document. It also checks that the brief covers the relevant material and suits its audience.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00049 $0.00489
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00244
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00098
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00049

Security

Grade A, and why

to-brief scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

📄 Think To Brief

ID: think-it-through/to-brief
HACP: 0.4
Kind: operation
Mode: artifact
Traits: read-only, artifact
Default Binding: Result supplied by the combo, otherwise full available conversation
Accepts: hacp/content, hacp/result
Produces: think-it-through/thinking-brief
Duration: until-confirmed

Effect: Verify coverage, infer a useful document form and audience, and produce a portable Markdown checkpoint using the subject's vocabulary.

Limits: Keep traces and deck vocabulary outside the artifact unless they are the subject or requested. Do not run a hidden recap, invent conclusions, claim cross-session memory, synchronize later, or overwrite without permission.

Flow

flowchart TD
    A["Final result or default binding"] --> B["Verify coverage and choose document form"]
    B --> C{"Destination?"}
    C -->|None| D["Return Markdown inline"]
    C -->|Inferred| E["Show creation preview"]
    E --> F["Wait for confirmation"]
    C -->|Explicit| G{"Already exists?"}
    G -->|No| H["Create artifact"]
    G -->|Yes| I{"Overwrite approved?"}
    I -->|Yes| H
    I -->|No| J["Wait for permission"]

Follow an applicable method or project convention; otherwise use portable Markdown. A creation preview states the overview, outline, inclusions, exclusions, and proposed path.

Format

Add → 📄 **BRIEF** after the final move in the combo trace, or begin with > 🎯 **<binding>** → 📄 **BRIEF** when used alone. Add presentation cards with +.

Keep that trace in the conversational envelope, outside the brief. Show status only while awaiting confirmation or overwrite permission. A later session resumes only when the user supplies the brief or its content.

Files

What ships with it

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
