cratis-screenplay-read-surface

cratis-screenplay-read-surface is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Cratis/AI. It costs 146 tokens per session (4,165 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to the read side of a Cratis Screenplay model. Read models describe available data, queries retrieve it, and screens describe how people see it.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add or change read-model shapes, filtered or scoped queries, live queries, performers, and screen details.
Why use it?
It separates data shaped for reading from the commands that change the system, making queries and user-facing views easier to define.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00146 $0.04165
Opus 5.5 $0.00058 $0.01666
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00029 $0.00833
Haiku 4.5 $0.00015 $0.00417

Security

Grade A, and why

cratis-screenplay-read-surface scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The Screenplay read surface

Read preferred syntax when writing or reviewing .play.

What the system can be asked, and what a user sees. The readmodel declares the shape, the query is the entry point, and the screen renders it.

Locate the model

Look first for the project's existing .play files: the folder holding them is the model. A new model goes under the repository's Source/ or src/ folder, else in a Screenplay/ folder at the repository root; never under .cratis/, which holds configuration and the shared AI corpus only. This is the conventional home for consumer-owned .play source; do not invent another location or search the whole repository before checking it.

cratis ai install manages .cratis/ai/, never model files. Never hand-copy Screenplay source between repositories. Keep Markdown that explains, questions or navigates the model in the repository's documentation; the .play source is the single flow model.

Product sources

Screenplay Documentation/screenplay/{queries,readmodels,screens,policies,specifications,interactions,types,vscode}.md describe the parser, validator and binder behavior, including which query shapes bind and render (Semantics/). Compilation does not establish query execution. Equality-filter evidence: read the sources and compiled example.

readmodel — shape only

Excerpt, inside a StateView slice:

readmodel AccountBalance
description "What the account is worth right now"
  balance Decimal
  movements Int
  note String optional

A read model declares what it is — nothing about what builds it. Whatever builds it points at it with =>, and exactly one thing may: two builders is error PLAY0191. See cratis-screenplay-projections for the builder side.

Use trailing key on top-level read-model properties, never identifier. Explicit marks replace inference; otherwise a single-instance query's by supplies identity (all such queries must agree). Only with no single-instance identifier and an admitted list query does the binder infer an unambiguous *Id; queryless read models need an explicit key. See named keys below for collection-key exclusions. One explicit key binds byte-identically to equivalent inference. Several marks form a flat composite key: an optional single-instance query names every part in a by block, a list query narrows with equality filters, and fixtures state every part. Requires Screenplay 4.204.0 (ESM v27; screenplay --version); older binders refuse several key marks with PLAY0268. A list query over such a read model cannot use a by block (PLAY0268). Read named keys for one complete executable example, trigger/command reads, all-parts fixtures, PLAY0660–0662 and command-read-only PLAY0661 repair. A => target resolving to an event is an event-target builder, not a read model; keep event and read-model names distinct (see projections' public-event targets).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cratis-screenplay-read-surface is a skill published in the GitHub repository Cratis/AI (4 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 146 tokens to every session and 4,165 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-19.
