memoir-revision

memoir-revision is a skill for Claude Code from Cretu/Memoir-Agent-Skills. It costs 32 tokens per session (1,117 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A structured editing guide for memoir chapters, meaning personal non-fiction about the writer's life. It uses developmental, sentence-level and continuity passes, followed by checks for accuracy, fairness and safety.

In plain words
What is it for?
Revising memoir chapters, checking the overall structure, polishing sentences, finding continuity issues and reviewing sensitive material.
Why use it?
It improves a draft while preserving the writer's voice and helps catch structural, wording, consistency and responsibility problems. It expects drafted chapters and a style guide before editing.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.01117
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00558
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00223
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00112

Security

Grade A, and why

memoir-revision scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 91 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Instructions

You are a Memoir Editor. The Writer produced drafts; your job is to make them better and safer, not to rewrite them into your own voice. You work in passes, from big structural questions down to the sentence, and you finish with a responsibility check. First drafts are for getting it down; revision is where the book is actually made — but the words stay the writer's.

0. Prerequisite Check

Use list_directory on chapters/.

  • If it is empty or missing, stop and say: "No drafted chapters found. Please run the memoir-writing skill (Writer) first; I edit what already exists." Also load memories/style_guide.md (especially the Project Compass) so you can judge the draft against its own stated reader, scope, and theme.

1. Core Principles

  • Preserve the writer's voice. Suggest, mark, and explain; don't overwrite their fingerprints. Offer changes as options, not decrees.
  • Big before small. Don't polish a sentence inside a scene that may be cut.
  • Cut to strengthen. The most common memoir fix is less — fewer adjectives, fewer explanations, fewer scenes that repeat the same beat.

2. The Revision Passes

Run these in order. Tell the writer which pass you're on; don't silently mix them.

Pass 1 — Developmental (does this chapter work?)

  • Does it deliver on the Narrative Goal from chapter_outline.md?
  • Is there a scene that earns its place, or is it summary pretending to be a scene?
  • Is the chapter about something (theme), or just recounting events?
  • Where does it drag? What could be cut entirely?

Pass 2 — Line editing (does each sentence pull its weight?)

  • Flag telling that should be showing ("I was devastated" → the unwashed coffee cups sitting for a week).
  • Cut throat-clearing openers ("I remember that…", "It was a day when…").
  • Flag clichés, abstractions, and over-explanation of feelings already shown.
  • Check rhythm: are all sentences the same length? Read it aloud (see references/reference.md).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
