yt-search

yt-search is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from cth9191/morning-intel. It costs 93 tokens per session (478 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A YouTube search tool that returns structured video results with titles, channels, subscribers, views, duration, upload dates, engagement ratios, and direct links. It can limit results by count and recent months or search across all dates.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find videos about a topic, research recent or trending YouTube content, compare videos, or look up creators and channels.
Why use it?
It turns a broad YouTube search into a consistent list that is easier to scan and compare. Engagement ratios help show when a video has performed strongly relative to its channel's subscriber base.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00093 $0.00478
Opus 5 $0.00046 $0.00239
Sonnet 5 $0.00019 $0.00096
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00048

Security

Grade A, and why

yt-search scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/search.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Search YouTube using yt-dlp and return structured, formatted results with engagement metrics.

How to use

Run the search script:

python "~/.claude/skills/yt-search/scripts/search.py" <query> [--count N] [--months N] [--no-date-filter]

Parameters

  • <query> — search terms (required)
  • --count N — number of results to return (default: 20)
  • --months N — only show videos from the last N months (default: 6)
  • --no-date-filter — include videos of any age

Examples

# Basic search (top 20, last 6 months)
python "~/.claude/skills/yt-search/scripts/search.py" claude code tutorial

# Fewer results, shorter window
python "~/.claude/skills/yt-search/scripts/search.py" obsidian workflow --count 5 --months 3

# All time, no date filter
python "~/.claude/skills/yt-search/scripts/search.py" AI agents --count 10 --no-date-filter

Output format

Each result includes:

  • Title
  • Channel name and subscriber count
  • View count
  • Duration
  • Upload date
  • Engagement ratio (views / subscribers) — higher means the video outperformed the channel's base
  • Direct URL

Results are separated by dividers for easy scanning. Status messages (searching, filtering) go to stderr; the formatted results go to stdout.

Notes

  • yt-dlp must be installed (pip install yt-dlp)
  • The script fetches 2x the requested count to compensate for date filtering
  • Subscriber counts come from yt-dlp metadata and may occasionally be unavailable (shown as N/A)
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

yt-search is a skill published in the GitHub repository cth9191/morning-intel (8 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 93 tokens to every session and 478 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
