excel-index-match

excel-index-match is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from cxcscmu/SkillLearnBench. It costs 19 tokens per session (347 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A pattern for using Excel's INDEX and MATCH functions to find a value by matching both a row condition and a column condition, such as a series and a year.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for cross-sheet lookups in structured Excel tables, including formulas written with openpyxl.
Why use it?
It solves lookups that depend on two criteria and keeps copied formulas pointed at the correct rows and columns.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00019 $0.00347
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00173
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00069
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00035

Security

Grade A, and why

excel-index-match scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

INDEX & MATCH for Two-Condition Lookups in Excel

Pattern: Cross-Sheet Lookup with Two Criteria

When you need to look up a value using both a row identifier and a column identifier (e.g., series code + year), use INDEX/MATCH:

=INDEX(DataRange, MATCH(RowCriteria, RowLookupRange, 0), MATCH(ColCriteria, ColLookupRange, 0))

Example

Given a Data sheet with series codes in column B and years in row 4:

=INDEX(Data!$H$21:$M$40, MATCH($D12, Data!$B$21:$B$40, 0), MATCH(H$9, Data!$H$4:$M$4, 0))

Key Points

  • Use $ to lock ranges that shouldn't shift when copying formulas
  • Lock row criteria column with $D12 (column locked, row relative)
  • Lock year row with H$9 (column relative, row locked)
  • The third argument 0 means exact match
  • INDEX range and MATCH ranges must align (same rows/columns)

Openpyxl Implementation

# When writing INDEX/MATCH formulas via openpyxl, use string assignment:
ws['H12'] = '=INDEX(Data!$H$21:$M$40,MATCH($D12,Data!$B$21:$B$40,0),MATCH(H$9,Data!$H$4:$M$4,0))'
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

excel-index-match is a skill published in the GitHub repository cxcscmu/SkillLearnBench (83 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 19 tokens to every session and 347 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
