api-auth

api-auth is a skill for Claude Code from cyanheads/calculator-mcp-server. It costs 58 tokens per session (2,877 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of api-auth, Apache-2.0.

Authentication and authorization patterns for MCP tools and resources built with @cyanheads/mcp-ts-core. Authentication checks who is calling, while authorization checks what that caller is allowed to do.

In plain words
What is it for?
Declaring required scopes, configuring no-auth, JWT, or OAuth modes, handling tenant IDs, and checking permissions that depend on request values such as team or resource IDs.
Why use it?
They let a framework enforce required permissions before a handler runs, reducing the need for repeated manual checks and helping keep tenant data separated.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Security

Grade A, and why

api-auth scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Overview

The framework handles auth at the handler factory level — tools and resources declare required scopes declaratively, and the framework enforces them before calling the handler. No try/catch or manual scope checking required for the common case.

Inline auth (primary pattern)

Declare required scopes directly on the tool or resource definition via the auth property. The handler factory checks ctx.auth.scopes against these before calling handler.

import { tool } from '@cyanheads/mcp-ts-core';

const myTool = tool('my_tool', {
  input: z.object({ query: z.string().describe('Search query') }),
  output: z.object({ result: z.string().describe('Search result') }),
  auth: ['tool:my_tool:read'],
  async handler(input, ctx) {
    // Only reached if caller has 'tool:my_tool:read' scope
  },
});

When MCP_AUTH_MODE=none, auth checks are skipped and defaults are allowed.

A failed check returns Forbidden (-32005, Insufficient permissions.) or, when auth is enabled but the request carries no auth context, Unauthorized (-32006). Neither carries data: the required, granted, and missing scope names stay in the server log, so a caller cannot enumerate scopes from the error.

The scope check logs a missing scope at warning, naming the missing scopes. On a tool, the call's Error in tool:<name> record follows at notice with no stack — the refusal is the caller's standing, not a fault in this server — and mcp.errors.classified counts it with mcp.error.severity: "notice". That holds for the inline check and for checkScopes in a handler alike, and the level is fixed: the refusal carries no data.reason, so no errors[] entry can set it. A missing auth context keeps its Error in tool: record at error, and so does a forbidden() the handler throws itself. A resource read the inline check refuses writes only the scope check's own records.

Dynamic auth

For runtime-computed scopes (e.g., scopes that depend on input values like a team or resource ID), use checkScopes from @cyanheads/mcp-ts-core/auth inside the handler:
