un-comtrade-guide

un-comtrade-guide is a skill for Claude Code from cyanheads/un-comtrade-mcp-server. It costs 45 tokens per session (1,508 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide to using UN Comtrade, a database of reported international trade in goods and services. It explains how to identify countries, products, services, and historical classifications before comparing trade data.

In plain words
What is it for?
It supports historical trade comparisons, partner and product rankings, bilateral trade balances, mirror analysis between reported exports and imports, and unit-value calculations.
Why use it?
It helps avoid invalid country or product codes and misleading comparisons caused by missing coverage or different classification versions. It also clarifies that the data does not show tariffs or actual transaction prices.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00045 $0.01508
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00603
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00302
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00151

Security

Grade A, and why

un-comtrade-guide scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 57 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Scope

Use UN Comtrade for reported international merchandise and services trade. It does not provide tariff schedules, national tariff-line detail, or observed transaction prices. Keyless preview supports focused analysis; a configured subscription key changes upstream access, not the need to verify completeness.

Identifiers

  • Resolve countries with comtrade_lookup_countries for the intended role. A partner area can be invalid as a reporter (World, Metropolitan France 250), while some groupings report (European Union, 97); validAsReporter and role settle it. Select the returned reporting identity rather than a familiar ISO numeric code: Comtrade's USA reporter is 842, while the similarly named 840 entry is not reporter-valid. comtrade://countries enumerates the reference entries when browsing is needed.
  • Discover goods through comtrade_search_commodities. Keep codes as strings, including leading zeros. The default HS catalog is useful for discovery; use the selected HS edition or SITC revision for historical meanings. comtrade://hs-classification/{level} navigates the default HS hierarchy, not historical editions.
  • Discover services through comtrade_list_service_categories, which searches the combined EB catalog. Use its returned category and description together; numeric and SDMX category schemes coexist, so a familiar-looking code is not proof of meaning. Each category's schemes tags name the scheme catalogs (EB10, EB10S, EB02) that list its code.

Gates

  1. Before calling missing records zero trade, confirm the reporting identity, category, period, frequency, and classification. Check matching data availability; a published dataset does not guarantee a particular bilateral commodity row exists. Follow availability continuation before claiming the matching index is exhausted.
  2. Before comparing historical goods, inspect each row's classificationCode. The same commodity code can change meaning across editions. Default HS queries return as-reported data, not a conversion to one common edition. Explicit HS editions are unavailable on keyless trade-data preview; do not silently replace an edition-converted request with HS.
  3. Before reporting a complete series or ranking, inspect truncation, coverage, reference notices, and unserved inputs: unservedPeriods, unservedReporters, unservedCmdCodes, and reportersWithoutRecords. Retrieve remaining periods, reporters, or codes separately. A reporter listed in reportersWithoutRecords returned no rows; read its referenceStatus and suggestedReporterCode before concluding it has no trade, since a partner-only code such as 250 reports as 251. Missing descriptions do not justify guessing a commodity's meaning.
  4. Before summing goods, choose one aggregation level and exclude overlapping parent/child codes and TOTAL rows from the same sum. World totals and country breakdowns are alternative views; do not add them together.
  5. Before computing balances or comparing mirror flows, align period, commodity definition, and reporting perspective. A missing import or export value is not zero. Preserve caveats about CIF/FOB valuation, timing, re-exports, and country definitions.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
