architecture-patterns

architecture-patterns is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from dagba/ios-mcp. It costs 39 tokens per session (788 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for choosing iOS app architecture patterns such as MV, MVVM, TCA, and Clean Architecture. It connects each pattern to the size and complexity of a feature and gives implementation rules for common SwiftUI code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when designing an iOS feature, deciding between architecture patterns, or refactoring existing SwiftUI code with shared state, network calls, complex flows, or multiple teams.
Why use it?
It helps avoid using an architecture that is too complex or too limited for the feature. It also provides conventions that make state, dependencies, and testing easier to organize.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00039 $0.00788
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00394
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00158
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00079

Security

Grade A, and why

architecture-patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Architecture Patterns

Overview

Quick reference for choosing and implementing iOS architecture patterns. Focused on decision criteria, not tutorials.

Pattern Selection

Complexity Pattern Use When
Simple MV Single screen, local state only
Medium MVVM 2-5 screens, business logic, network calls
Complex TCA State machines, side effects, complex flows
Enterprise Clean Multiple teams, maximum modularity

Decision Tree

1. Single screen + local state only?
   → MV (SwiftUI View + @State)

2. Business logic or shared state?
   → MVVM

3. Complex state transitions?
   → TCA

4. Multi-team, high modularity?
   → Clean Architecture

MVVM Pattern (Most Common)

Structure:

  • ViewModels: @Observable, protocol-based DI
  • Views: @State private var viewModel
  • Services: Protocols for testability

Critical Rules:

  • ✅ Protocol-based DI via init (enables mocking)
  • @MainActor for state updates
  • ✅ Keep Views dumb (delegate to ViewModel)
  • ❌ Never import SwiftUI in ViewModels
  • ❌ Never use @Published (use @Observable)
  • ❌ Never make ViewModels optional

Minimal Example:

protocol AuthServiceProtocol {
    func login(_ email: String, _ password: String) async throws -> User
}

@Observable
final class LoginViewModel {
    private let authService: AuthServiceProtocol
    var email = ""
    var password = ""
    var isLoading = false

    init(authService: AuthServiceProtocol = AuthService()) {
        self.authService = authService
    }

    @MainActor
    func login() async {
        isLoading = true
        defer { isLoading = false }
        try? await authService.login(email, password)
    }
}

struct LoginView: View {
    @State private var viewModel = LoginViewModel()
    var body: some View {
        Form {
            TextField("Email", text: $viewModel.email)
            SecureField("Password", text: $viewModel.password)
            Button("Login") { Task { await viewModel.login() } }
                .disabled(viewModel.isLoading)
        }
    }
}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

architecture-patterns is a skill published in the GitHub repository dagba/ios-mcp (3 stars, last pushed 7mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 39 tokens to every session and 788 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
