dancing-bear: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/rename-session/SKILL.md

rename-session is a skill for Claude Code from dancing-bear-show/dancing-bear. It costs 42 tokens per session (476 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A small utility that renames the current tmux session, a named group of terminal windows, to a short summary of the current work. It can include a pull request number when one exists.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to generate and apply a short session name based on the current task, with an optional pull request prefix.
Why use it?
It keeps terminal sessions identifiable while work changes, reducing the need to rename them by hand. It also avoids using an old pull request number when checking for one.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.00476
Opus 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00190
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00095
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00048

Security

Grade A, and why

rename-session scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (rename.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Rename tmux Session

Generate a descriptive name for the current tmux session based on what we're working on right now, then apply it.

Generate and Apply Name

Look at the last few messages in context to understand the current task. Before choosing a name, check whether a PR exists for the current branch:

# Clear BOTH token variables: gh honours GH_TOKEN as well as GITHUB_TOKEN, so
# clearing only one leaves a stale token able to break PR detection — which
# fails silently here and just drops the pr-<N>- prefix.
pr_number=$(GITHUB_TOKEN= GH_TOKEN= gh pr view --json number -q .number 2>/dev/null)
  • If $pr_number is non-empty, prefer pr-<NUMBER>-<topic> (e.g. pr-42-gmail-filters).
  • If empty, use the topic alone (current behavior).

Then apply the name (the script validates the name, renames the session, and pushes the tab title — the guard hook rejects the inline form of this block, so the tab title would silently not update without the script):

bash .claude/skills/rename-session/rename.sh "<name>"

Naming rules:

  • 2-4 words, lowercase, hyphens not spaces (no spaces in the name)
  • Capture the topic, not the action — gmail-label-sync not syncing-gmail-labels
  • Max 30 characters
  • No punctuation other than hyphens
  • When a PR exists on the current branch, prefix the name with pr-<NUMBER>-

Good: pr-42-gmail-filters, mail-label-sync, calendar-scan, resume-render, whatsapp-search Bad: branch names (too long), repo names (no context), edit-filter-yaml (too granular)

Report the new session name to the user.

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

rename-session is a skill published in the GitHub repository dancing-bear-show/dancing-bear (7 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 476 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-07.
