sdd-research

sdd-research is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from danweinerdev/claude-sdd-planner. It costs 23 tokens per session (672 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research workflow for investigating a topic and producing a structured research document. It is intended for gathering and combining information before making a decision.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to research technologies, understand existing systems, explore unknown topics, and prepare structured decision-support material.
Why use it?
It gives unfamiliar or complex subjects a defined investigation process, helping turn scattered findings into an organized document.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.00672
Opus 5 $0.00012 $0.00336
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00067

Security

Grade A, and why

sdd-research scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Investigate a Topic

Resources

Before opening shared/..., follow symlinks in this loaded file's path, then derive <plugin-root> from <plugin-root>/skills/<name>/SKILL.md; fallback search roots are repository/user .agents/ (including $HOME/.agents/plugins/*/), Codex ${CODEX_HOME:-$HOME/.codex}/plugins/cache/*/*/*/, and runtime-configured skill roots. Accept only a root containing this skill, shared/agent-runtime.md, and the matching plugin manifest; never use the working directory. Then read <plugin-root>/shared/agent-runtime.md and <plugin-root>/shared/path-resolution.md, and resolve every shared/<path> reference in this skill against <plugin-root>.

Resource boundary: Read the plugin, all SKILL.md files, and shared/ resources in place. Never copy or symlink them into the working directory, target repository, or planning root. Only generated SDD outputs may be materialized from bundled resources.

When to Use

When you need to gather and synthesize information about a topic before making decisions. Good for technology evaluations, understanding existing systems, or exploring unknowns.

Process

  1. Define Scope

    • If the user hasn't already specified it, ask what topic to research and what questions need answering
    • Determine if this is codebase research, external research, or both
  2. Gather Information

    • Dispatch a collaboration subagent rendering shared/agent-prompts/researcher.md (or perform that prompt yourself if collaboration is unavailable) with the topic and questions
    • The agent will scan existing artifacts, codebase, and web as needed
  3. Synthesize

    • Create Research/<topic-slug>.md using shared/templates/research.md (<topic-slug> is lowercase kebab-case, e.g., auth-token-rotation)
    • Organize findings into Context, Key Insights, Sources, Analysis
    • Highlight implications and recommendations
    • List open questions that remain
  4. Link

    • Add cross-references to related artifacts in the related frontmatter field

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

sdd-research is a skill published in the GitHub repository danweinerdev/claude-sdd-planner (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 672 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
