navigation-status

navigation-status is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Darwin-Agent/Car-bench-TRACE. It costs 101 tokens per session (1,297 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A read-only navigation helper that reports whether a route is active and, when requested, its stops, distances, travel times, and estimated arrival time.

In plain words
What is it for?
Checking an active route, its next stop, remaining distance, duration, or estimated arrival time.
Why use it?
It avoids repeated navigation-state reads and clearly reports when the required state-reading tool is unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00101 $0.01297
Opus 5 $0.00051 $0.00648
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00259
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00130

Security

Grade A, and why

navigation-status scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Report navigation status

A read-only request: tell the user whether navigation is running and, when asked, the route details (waypoints, distances, durations, ETA). This is answered from a single read of the navigation state — set the detailed flag appropriately on that one call and reuse the result. The twist: the state-read tool may be absent, so the active route cannot be read at all.

When this applies

"Is navigation running?", "what's my current route?", "how far / how long to go?", "where's my next stop?" — a read-only status and details request. (To start a route, change the destination, or edit a stop, see the other navigation skills.)

Tools

  • get_current_navigation_state({detailed_information}) — read whether navigation is active and, with the detailed flag on, the full route details (waypoints, distances, durations). May be the missing tool — then you cannot read or verify the active route.

Method

  1. Call get_current_navigation_state once, with the detailed flag set appropriately. If the user asks (or even hints) about the route — destination, waypoints, distance, duration, ETA — set detailed_information:true on the first call so a single read covers both "is it running?" and the details. When unsure whether a details follow-up is coming, default to detailed_information:true: it answers the bare "is it on?" too and saves a second call.
  2. Answer both questions from that one result — active/inactive status and any route details — without redundantly re-calling.
  3. Present details at the right level. For an active route, give the destination and, when detailed, the route's distance, duration, and name_via; per policy surface toll-road info when you describe a route; note the waypoint order/count for a multi-stop route. Keep it concise and speakable (this is voiced), then stop.

Ask vs. infer

  • A status request is rarely ambiguous — read and answer. Don't ask the user to narrow it; the one detailed read gives you everything to answer status and details.
  • Set the detailed flag from the request. If details are clearly wanted, read with detailed_information:true once; don't read with it off and then make a second redundant call to get the details.
  • Re-read only when the state genuinely changed. Re-calling to fetch detail the first read already returned is the mistake. A fresh read to confirm the state after something altered it (a route was just set, a waypoint added) is legitimate — answer from that single fresh read and don't loop further.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

navigation-status is a skill published in the GitHub repository Darwin-Agent/Car-bench-TRACE (8 stars, last pushed 7d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 101 tokens to every session and 1,297 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
