dash0-configure

dash0-configure is a skill for Claude Code from dash0hq/dash0-agent-plugin. It costs 88 tokens per session (1,927 once invoked), scanned C, original, Apache-2.0.

Instructions for configuring Dash0 telemetry in Claude Code. Telemetry is data about a program's operation, such as events and measurements, sent to Dash0 for monitoring.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create or update the Dash0 configuration, provide an OTLP endpoint and token, choose a team and troubleshoot an inactive integration.
Why use it?
It helps finish or repair the configuration when telemetry is inactive or no team is selected. It explains where settings are stored and which setting takes priority.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00088 $0.01927
Opus 5 $0.00044 $0.00963
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00385
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00193

Security

Grade C, and why

dash0-configure scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

- macOS and Linux: `chmod 600 <file>`

.claude/, .codex/, .gemini/ hold keys, settings and other credentials a mod has no legitimate need for.

2. `pluginConfigs` in user-level `~/.claude/settings.json`, which is what `/plugin → Configure` writes

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 109 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Configure Dash0

Write the config file the plugin reads on session start. The file holds every plugin option in YAML frontmatter.

Trigger

The user wants to configure or reconfigure the Dash0 plugin. Two common shapes:

  • First-time setup. They have an OTLP URL and an auth token, or the session said dash0: telemetry is not active.
  • Finishing setup. Telemetry works, but the session said dash0: no team configured. Offer this once per session, then leave it alone unless the user brings it up.

Before you start

If the user prefers OS keychain–backed storage for the auth token over a plaintext file, direct them to /pluginInstalleddash0Configure instead of running this skill, then stop.

Note the precedence order (highest first) so the user isn't surprised when a value doesn't apply:

  1. pluginConfigs in enterprise-managed settings — users cannot override these
  2. pluginConfigs in user-level ~/.claude/settings.json, which is what /plugin → Configure writes
  3. Project-level config file (.claude/dash0-agent-plugin.local.md)
  4. User-level config file (~/.claude/dash0-agent-plugin.local.md)
  5. DASH0_* environment variables

If the user already has values set via the UI or managed settings, the file this skill writes is ignored for those keys. Ask them to clear the UI config first, or use the UI directly.

[!IMPORTANT] auth_token follows that list like every other key: a token in pluginConfigs or managed settings wins over one in the file. Earlier releases were the other way round, because the wrapper loaded the file's token into the variable the UI writes. So writing auth_token for a user on a managed rollout does not override the org token — it has no effect until the UI value is cleared. Say that rather than promising an override.

Scope

Ask whether to write user-level (~/.claude/dash0-agent-plugin.local.md, applies to all projects) or project-level (.claude/dash0-agent-plugin.local.md, only the current project — overrides the user-level file entirely, does not merge). Default to user-level unless the user asks for project-only.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

dash0-configure is a skill published in the GitHub repository dash0hq/dash0-agent-plugin (5 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 88 tokens to every session and 1,927 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it C with 2 findings (asks for root, reads agent configuration directories). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
