gws-mcp Development

gws-mcp (DataToRag/gws-mcp, public, local clone ~/git/gws-mcp) is the Google Workspace MCP plugin the gateway installs — a separate repo, separate release cycle from datatorag-mcp. It wraps the gws CLI binary (googleworkspace/cli, Rust) rather than calling Google APIs directly.

The sibling plugin atlassian-mcp (DataToRag/atlassian-mcp, public, local clone ~/git/atlassian-mcp) follows the same repo anatomy (src/tools/ per service + shared response.ts, datatorag.json manifest, tsc → server/, no test framework) and the same ship tail below — these recipes apply there too, minus everything gws-binary-specific: it calls the Atlassian REST API directly via src/atlassian-client.ts, with the per-user token injected per call by the gateway. Plugin MCP ports on prod are assigned 40000+ by the plugin-manager (gws-mcp is 40000; check mcp_servers.container_port for the rest). Per-repo CLAUDE.md files in both plugin repos carry only repo-specific facts and point back here for everything else.

Repo anatomy

src/tools/*.ts — one file per service: gmail.ts, calendar.ts, contacts.ts, docs.ts, drive.ts, sheets.ts, slides.ts, tasks.ts, auth.ts, plus generic.ts (the gws_run fallback) and response.ts (shared response helpers). src/tools/index.ts aggregates every module's tool array into allTools and builds the toolHandlers dispatch map.
src/gws-client.ts — the GwsClient wrapper. src/create-server.ts / src/extension.ts (stdio, Claude Desktop .mcpb) / src/index.ts (HTTP; defaults to port 39147 standalone — under the gateway the plugin-manager overrides it via PORT env to 40000+) are the two entry points.
datatorag.json — the plugin manifest the gateway reads: name, description, and an oauth block (scopes, authorizeUrl/tokenUrl, clientIdEnv/clientSecretEnv — env var names, no secret values).
Build: package.json's build script, scripts/download-binaries.sh.
Tests: vitest (npm test), added 2026-07-31 — unit tests live next to the module (src/tools/*.test.ts, excluded from the tsc build via tsconfig exclude) and use a fake { api } client, so handlers are testable without network. Live smoke tests against real Google APIs remain the verification for actual API behavior, documented in the merge commit message. Note: this repo uses npm (package-lock.json), not pnpm.
