Session Journal Skill

This skill enables the coding agent to automatically (or manually) log, track, and summarize active coding sessions and user discussions. It compiles local diaries for each session and keeps a master Session Index (SESSION-INDEX.md) updated. These materials are extremely useful for tracing project history, identifying tricky bugs/solutions, and cataloging ideas for educational blogs, videos, or open-source code examples.

To maintain workspace cleanliness, this skill automatically configures the repository's .gitignore file to ensure no session logs are accidentally checked into public version control.


🛠️ Setup & Directory Structure

Inside the active workspace, the session logs are stored in a local directory:

The workspace's .gitignore file is automatically appended with .local/ to keep all logs entirely local to the user's system.


🔄 Step-by-Step Workflow

To ensure session logs and the session index stay updated and accurate, follow this workflow:

Step 1: Initialize the Active Session Journal

At the start of the session, or immediately upon loading this skill:

  1. Locate your active Conversation ID (from the prompt metadata or your conversation transcript).
  2. Create a new markdown file: .local/sessions/session_<conversation_id>.md.
  3. Fill out the frontmatter and structure using the Session Journal Template below. Set status to In-Progress.

Step 2: Manage Git Exclusions

Ensure the .local/ directory is ignored by checking/updating .gitignore. If .local/ is not listed, append it. (If using the Python helper script, this is automated on every run).

Step 3: Log & Update as the Session Runs

As you perform work (editing files, fixing compiler warnings, passing tests, discovering undocumented project behavior):

  1. Log Key Decisions: Document why a specific implementation pattern was chosen over another.
  2. Track Challenges: Note when you encounter complex issues (e.g. tricky pointer errors in Go, container setup complications).
  3. Brainstorm Public Content: Keep an eye out for features or bug-fixes that would make excellent blog posts, video tutorials, or open-source code templates.
