prompt-for-others

prompt-for-others is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from davidondrej/skills. It costs 38 tokens per session (602 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for turning a fix or setup task into one paste-ready instruction for another person's coding agent. It includes the goal, context, commands, checks, stop conditions, and requested result.

In plain words
What is it for?
Preparing team-wide instructions for upgrades, bug fixes, setup work, or other repeatable changes on each teammate's machine.
Why use it?
It gives a teammate's agent the missing context and exact steps instead of relying on an earlier conversation. This reduces guesswork and helps prevent untested commands from being shared.

About the project

David Ondrej's Agent Skills is a repository of reusable instruction packages for AI coding, research, and workflow agents. Each skill describes a focused process for tasks such as code improvement, research, documentation, transcript work, and agent coordination. The catalogue entries are the repository's own skills and related agent configuration.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.00602
Opus 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00241
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00120
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00060

Security

Grade A, and why

prompt-for-others scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Prompt For Others

Write for an AI agent on a teammate's machine with no chat context. The teammate may be non-technical and will not edit the prompt.

Workflow

  1. Test the fix on the user's machine unless already tested. Never include untested commands.
  2. Draft the paragraph in this exact order:
    • Goal in one sentence.
    • Context in 1–2 sentences: what the tool does, the problem, and why the fix is needed.
    • Steps as exact commands, in backticks, in order.
    • Verify with exact commands and expected output.
    • Stop rule: what to do if a precondition is missing.
    • Report back: the 1–2 facts the teammate should receive.
  3. Read as an agent with no context: could it run this without questions? Inline any missing context.
  4. Give the user one ready-to-copy paragraph in a blockquote, without headings, bullets, or commentary; then stop.

Rules

  • One paragraph. If it needs two, the fix is too big; split it or say so.
  • Commands must be copy-safe: absolute where it matters, no placeholders like <your-name> unless the agent can resolve them ($(id -u) is fine).
  • Prefer reversible steps. If a step is destructive, say so and require the agent to confirm with the human first.
  • Never include secrets, tokens, or private URLs. Point to where the agent can find them locally instead.
  • Explain why the change is needed in plain English.
  • Assume nothing is installed. Use a stop rule instead of an install fallback unless the user asked for one.

Example

Upgrade the repo-sync background service on this Mac to v0.1.1 and restart it. Context: repo-sync (Homebrew cask vectal-labs/tap/repo-sync) auto-syncs Git repos. v0.1.1 fixes misleading popups during network blips. The cask needs an explicit upgrade, followed by a service restart. Steps: run brew update && brew upgrade --cask repo-sync, then launchctl kickstart -k gui/$(id -u)/com.vectal-labs.repo-sync. Verify with brew list --cask --versions repo-sync (must show 0.1.1) and tail -3 ~/Library/Logs/repo-sync/stdout.log (must show a fresh watching N repositories line). If brew or the cask is missing, stop and tell me instead of installing anything. Report back the version and the log line.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
