install-mcp-server

install-mcp-server is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from dawsonlp/BaseMcpServer. It costs 86 tokens per session (1,065 once invoked), scanned C, original, MIT.

A setup procedure for installing one of four MCP servers from the BaseMcpServer monorepo, a repository that contains multiple related projects, and connecting it to Claude Desktop or Cline.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to install loadbearing-youtube, worldcontext, jira-helper, or mcpservercreator. These provide YouTube transcript analysis, current context, Jira and Confluence access, or MCP-server scaffolding.
Why use it?
It removes the manual work of preparing the tools, finding or cloning the server source, registering the server, and synchronising the editor configuration.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00086 $0.01065
Opus 5 $0.00043 $0.00532
Sonnet 5 $0.00017 $0.00213
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00106

Measured 4d ago against content hash a0974e0f2882, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade C, and why

install-mcp-server scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/install_mcp_server.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Install a BaseMcpServer MCP server

This skill installs one of the MCP servers in the dawsonlp/BaseMcpServer monorepo into the user's mcp-manager registry and (optionally) wires it into Claude Desktop / Cline. It works whether or not the repo is already cloned.

Server catalog

Server What it gives the agent Needs config?
loadbearing-youtube Extract a YouTube transcript and expose its load-bearing components (analyze_video, get_video_transcript, list_analysis_providers). No — defaults to local Ollama. Optional OpenAI/Anthropic keys.
worldcontext Current date/time, market, news, dev-tool versions. Optional API keys for market/news.
jira-helper Jira + Confluence integration. Yes — Jira URL + credentials.
mcpservercreator Scaffold new MCP servers from a code snippet. No.

Run the bundled installer. It ensures uv + mcp-manager exist, locates the server source (or shallow-clones the public repo), installs it, and syncs.

# from anywhere:
bash scripts/install_mcp_server.sh loadbearing-youtube

Useful flags:

  • --no-sync — register the server but don't touch editor settings yet.
  • --force — reinstall an already-installed server.
  • --source DIR — install from a specific local checkout.

Ask before syncing to editors. mcp-manager sync edits the user's Claude Desktop / Cline settings files (persistent app configuration). If the user only asked to "install" the server, run with --no-sync first, then confirm before syncing.

Manual path (if you want to run the steps yourself)

# 1. One-time: uv + mcp-manager
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh
uv tool install "git+https://github.com/dawsonlp/BaseMcpServer.git#subdirectory=utils/mcp_manager"
uv tool update-shell

# 2. Get the repo (skip if already cloned; then cd into it)
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/dawsonlp/BaseMcpServer.git
cd BaseMcpServer

# 3. Install the server (isolated uv env under ~/.config/mcp-manager/servers/<name>/)
mcp-manager install loadbearing-youtube --source ./servers/loadbearing-youtube

# 4. (If the server needs credentials) edit its config, then sync into editors
$EDITOR ~/.config/mcp-manager/servers/loadbearing-youtube/config.yaml # not needed for loadbearing-youtube
mcp-manager sync

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
