background-job-change

background-job-change is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from dayfinggg/openai-codex-agent-skills. It costs 31 tokens per session (360 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for changing background workers, queues, and scheduled tasks. It checks what happens when work is delivered twice, retried, interrupted, or completed while the process shuts down.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing queue consumers, scheduled jobs, retry rules, timeouts, acknowledgments, dead-letter handling, or worker shutdown logic.
Why use it?
It helps prevent lost jobs, duplicate side effects, unsafe acknowledgments, and unbounded retries. It also makes failure and shutdown behavior match the existing delivery agreement.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00031 $0.00360
Opus 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00144
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00072
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

background-job-change scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Verify the worker's delivery contract and side effects.

  1. Establish the queue or scheduler, client and broker versions, message shape, acknowledgment policy, concurrency, and worker lifecycle. Read both producers and consumers of the changed event.
  2. Determine the actual delivery semantics and what happens after a process crash. Do not assume exactly-once execution from an acknowledgment setting or deduplication name.
  3. Trace writes, external effects, and acknowledgment relative to commit. Define idempotency at the business operation where required. Repeating a non-idempotent external request needs a supported reconciliation strategy.
  4. Distinguish transient and permanent failures. Preserve supported event types, ordering requirements, and retry policy. Bound attempts, time, and concurrency using existing operational constraints.
  5. Check poison-message handling, dead-letter or failed-job retention, cancellation, and graceful shutdown. Do not acknowledge work before its durable result unless the established contract intentionally does so.
  6. Make the smallest correction. Reuse the existing queue framework and transactional outbox or deduplication mechanism when present. Do not introduce a new broker for a local reliability issue.
  7. Verify the normal path, duplicate delivery, relevant partial failure, exhausted retry, and interruption between the side effect and acknowledgment. Inspect observable state and message lifecycle rather than only handler return values.

Read the broker and framework documentation matching installed versions. For PHP testing, read the PHP testing procedure. Use symfony-diagnostics for Symfony-specific operational evidence when needed. Finish with the original delivery contract preserved or an explicitly requested contract change verified.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

background-job-change is a skill published in the GitHub repository dayfinggg/openai-codex-agent-skills (8 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 31 tokens to every session and 360 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-30.
