structured-logging

structured-logging is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from dayfinggg/openai-codex-agent-skills. It costs 37 tokens per session (384 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for creating or repairing structured application logs: machine-readable events with fields such as outcomes, errors, request identifiers, and bounded context.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add missing error context, carry request or trace identity across a boundary, redact unsafe data, and verify log formatting and delivery behavior.
Why use it?
It helps make logs useful for diagnosing problems while preserving existing log fields and avoiding credentials, secrets, and sensitive data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00037 $0.00384
Opus 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00154
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00077
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00038

Security

Grade A, and why

structured-logging scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Produce useful diagnostic events without changing unrelated logging behavior.

  1. Read the current logger, processors, sinks, formatting, retention, and request or worker context. Establish the symptom or investigation the changed event must support.
  2. Choose a stable event meaning and fields from the actual operation. Record outcome, error identity, and relevant bounded context. Preserve existing field contracts used by queries and alerts.
  3. Propagate the existing request or trace identity across the changed boundary. Distinguish event time from observation time where collection delay matters. Do not invent trace IDs that cannot join the tracing system.
  4. Exclude credentials, session secrets, authorization headers, connection strings, and sensitive bodies. Inspect implicit serialization and exception context as well as explicit message text.
  5. Encode structured data through the logger rather than string-concatenating untrusted content. Verify newline and delimiter handling. Avoid logging the same exception at every layer without an operational reason.
  6. Check whether logging failure blocks the application or silently drops critical evidence. Reuse configured buffering and backpressure behavior rather than adding an unbounded in-memory queue.
  7. Emit representative success and error events through the real configured path. Verify schema, levels, redaction, correlation, sink delivery, and the query that needs the event.

Do not enable production debug output or collect payloads outside the task's authorization. Do not install a new logging platform merely to add an event.

Read OpenTelemetry Logs and OWASP Logging for the changed semantics.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

structured-logging is a skill published in the GitHub repository dayfinggg/openai-codex-agent-skills (8 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 37 tokens to every session and 384 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-30.
