dsmctl: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/nas-install/SKILL.md

nas-install is a skill for Claude Code from derekvery666/dsmctl. It costs 228 tokens per session (2,084 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A procedure for bringing a factory-reset or crashed Synology NAS, a network storage computer, back to a working DSM system.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing DSM, creating the first administrator, completing setup, disabling the built-in administrator, and optionally creating storage.
Why use it?
It organizes the recovery process, including DSM installation, administrator setup, and storage decisions, while highlighting destructive steps.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00228 $0.02084
Opus 5.5 $0.00091 $0.00834
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00046 $0.00417
Haiku 4.5 $0.00023 $0.00208

Security

Grade A, and why

nas-install scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

Bring up a fresh Synology NAS (install DSM → first admin → storage)

Goal: take a NAS that has no usable DSM to a working, manageable DSM (installed, first administrator created, setup wizard finished, built-in admin disabled), and then — as a separate, deliberate step — build its storage. Everything is a dsmctl invocation; this skill is the order of operations and the decision points. Installing DSM and creating a volume both erase the device's disks — destructive and irreversible. Confirm the target with the user before --install / --create-volume.

Two ways to run it — prefer STAGED

The steps are separate commands, so run them as distinct stages or chain them. Storage is a decision, not a default: how to lay out the disks (RAID level, SHR, one pool vs several, SSD cache, spare) usually needs a human/MIS call, and it should not be rushed inside a long-running install. So keep it its own stage — especially on higher-end machines with many bays.

Staged (recommended). Bring the box up to a working, inspectable NAS first, then decide storage separately when you and the operator are ready:

# 1. Install DSM. This blocks through download + reboot (minutes); run it in the
# background and monitor if the harness has a timeout. It stops at "DSM up".
dsmctl install --url http://<ip>:5000 --install --yes

# 2. Create the first admin + finish the wizard (fast). Now it is a working NAS
# you can log into and inspect.
dsmctl provision <name> --url https://<ip>:5001 --admin-user <user> --insecure-skip-tls-verify

# 3. Read the disks and DECIDE the layout with the operator, THEN build storage
# (follow the nas-storage-setup skill — it asks how to build the volume):
dsmctl --nas <name> storage inventory # disks present
dsmctl --nas <name> storage capabilities # which RAID types this model supports

(You can fold step 2 into step 1 with dsmctl install --admin-user <user>; the box still stops before storage.)

One-shot (simple / low-end / unattended only). When the layout is a foregone conclusion — e.g. a small box you always build as one all-disk btrfs RAID5 — you can chain everything. Note this single command blocks through install, reboot, first-setup, AND volume creation, so use it only when no storage discussion is needed:

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

nas-install is a skill published in the GitHub repository derekvery666/dsmctl (5 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 228 tokens to every session and 2,084 once invoked, about $0.0009 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
