openclaw-config

openclaw-config is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from dfridkin/clawops. It costs 0 tokens per session (282 once invoked), scanned A, original, MPL-2.0.

A configuration workflow for generating or updating openclaw.json, the settings file for a deployed OpenClaw stack. It checks the OpenClaw version and configures models, channels, gateway authentication, and secret references.

In plain words
What is it for?
Creating or changing an OpenClaw deployment configuration, including provider settings, communication channels, gateway login mode, and applying the result with clawops.
Why use it?
It helps avoid incompatible settings and keeps secret values out of the configuration file.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00282
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00141
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00056
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00028

Security

Grade A, and why

openclaw-config scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

/openclaw-config

Generate or update an openclaw.json config for a deployed stack.

Steps

  1. Read the OpenClaw version from spec/openclaw-versions.yaml to check compatibility quirks.

  2. Generate openclaw.json using the provider adapter's config template:

    • Model provider section (Bedrock, Anthropic API, etc.)
    • Channel configuration
    • Gateway auth mode
  3. Bedrock / AWS compatibility note: OpenClaw 2026.4.5+ requires AWS_PROFILE in the systemd EnvironmentFile=, NOT auth: "aws-sdk" in openclaw.json. The AWS adapter must emit BOTH for backwards compatibility. See spec/openclaw-versions.yaml.

  4. Secrets are always references (env var names, ARNs), never inline values. Per R6.

  5. Apply the config via clawops config set <key> <value> or during clawops up.

Output format

{
  "version": "2026.4",
  "gateway": {
    "port": 18789,
    "auth": { "mode": "token" }
  },
  "models": {},
  "channels": {}
}
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
