openclaw-backup

openclaw-backup is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from djblack1209-coder/OpenClaw-Bot. It costs 63 tokens per session (603 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A backup and restore procedure for OpenClaw’s state folder, which stores its settings, agents, credentials, schedules, devices, and memory files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create timestamped compressed backups, list existing backups, and restore an earlier OpenClaw state after stopping its services.
Why use it?
It gives you a saved copy before major changes or bulk skill installs, so you can recover if the current setup is damaged or data is lost.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00063 $0.00603
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00302
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00121
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00060

Measured 5d ago against content hash 5c432b5bb356, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-05, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

openclaw-backup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

OpenClaw Backup

Backup and restore the .openclaw state directory to prevent data loss.

When to Use

  • Before modifying openclaw.json or agent configs
  • Before bulk skill installs
  • Periodically (daily/weekly) as insurance
  • When user says "backup", "save state", or "snapshot"

Commands

Create backup

BACKUP_DIR="/Users/blackdj/Desktop/OpenClaw Bot/backups"
TIMESTAMP=$(date +%Y%m%d-%H%M%S)
mkdir -p "$BACKUP_DIR"
tar czf "$BACKUP_DIR/openclaw-$TIMESTAMP.tar.gz" \
  -C "/Users/blackdj/Desktop/OpenClaw Bot" \
  .openclaw/openclaw.json \
  .openclaw/agents \
  .openclaw/credentials \
  .openclaw/identity \
  .openclaw/cron \
  .openclaw/devices \
  .openclaw/telegram \
  OpenClaw/AGENTS.md \
  OpenClaw/SOUL.md \
  OpenClaw/IDENTITY.md \
  OpenClaw/USER.md \
  OpenClaw/MEMORY.md \
  OpenClaw/TOOLS.md \
  OpenClaw/memory
echo "Backup saved: $BACKUP_DIR/openclaw-$TIMESTAMP.tar.gz"

List backups

ls -lhtr "/Users/blackdj/Desktop/OpenClaw Bot/backups/"

Restore from backup

# Stop services first
launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ai.openclaw.gateway.plist
# Extract backup (overwrites current state)
tar xzf "/Users/blackdj/Desktop/OpenClaw Bot/backups/openclaw-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.tar.gz" \
  -C "/Users/blackdj/Desktop/OpenClaw Bot"
# Restart
launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ai.openclaw.gateway.plist

Cleanup old backups (keep last 7)

BACKUP_DIR="/Users/blackdj/Desktop/OpenClaw Bot/backups"
ls -t "$BACKUP_DIR"/openclaw-*.tar.gz | tail -n +8 | xargs rm -f 2>/dev/null

Notes

  • Backups exclude logs, browser profiles, and session data to keep size small
  • Always stop the gateway before restoring to avoid config conflicts
  • Recommended: run backup before any clawhub install batch
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
