ARIA Implementation Patterns

ARIA Implementation Patterns is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from djscheuf/agentic-dev-ecosystem-template. It costs 46 tokens per session (4,282 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to adding ARIA roles, states, keyboard behavior, and focus handling to custom web widgets. ARIA is a set of accessibility attributes that helps assistive technology understand controls when native HTML is not enough.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when building custom menus, tabs, dialogs, list boxes, or other interactive widgets that cannot be implemented with native HTML alone.
Why use it?
It helps avoid incomplete accessibility fixes, such as adding a role without implementing the required keyboard behavior. It first checks whether a standard HTML element or existing component should be used instead.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.04282
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.01713
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00856
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00428

Security

Grade A, and why

ARIA Implementation Patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 21d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

ARIA Implementation Patterns

Systematic procedure for implementing ARIA roles, states, and properties when native HTML is insufficient.

Pre-Implementation Checklist

CRITICAL: Complete this checklist before proceeding with ARIA implementation.

  • Verified native HTML element cannot meet requirements
  • Checked if ShadCN/Radix has this component
  • Identified matching W3C APG pattern
  • Understand complete keyboard behavior required for this pattern
  • Ready to implement full accessibility, not just add role attribute

If any checkbox is unchecked, reconsider whether ARIA is necessary.

Step 1: Verify Native HTML Won't Work

Question: Can this be accomplished with native HTML?

Native HTML Elements:

  • Button → <button>
  • Checkbox → <input type="checkbox">
  • Radio group → <input type="radio" name="group">
  • Select → <select> and <option>
  • Link → <a href>
  • Text input → <input type="text">
  • Number input → <input type="number">
  • Range slider → <input type="range">
  • Date picker → <input type="date">
  • Details/summary → <details> and <summary>

Only Proceed with ARIA If:

  1. Native element doesn't exist

    • Examples: tabs, tree view, breadcrumb, toolbar
  2. Native element lacks required behavior

    • Example: Combobox with search/autocomplete (native <select> doesn't support)
    • Example: Multi-level menu with keyboard shortcuts
  3. Design requires visual customization impossible with native elements

    • Example: Custom-styled select that must match brand guidelines
    • Note: Try CSS styling of native elements first

Decision Tree

Can native HTML do this?
├─ Yes → Use native HTML (STOP, do not use ARIA)
└─ No → Does ShadCN/Radix have this?
├─ Yes → Use ShadCN/Radix component (STOP, do not use ARIA)
    └─ No → Continue to Step 2

Step 2: Select Appropriate APG Pattern

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

ARIA Implementation Patterns is a skill published in the GitHub repository djscheuf/agentic-dev-ecosystem-template (12 stars, last pushed 20d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 46 tokens to every session and 4,282 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-02.
