self-critique

self-critique is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from dmoskov/sharedskills. It costs 21 tokens per session (724 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A post-task review in which an independent Gemini model examines completed work. Gemini is an AI model made by Google.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after significant code changes, before committing them, or when you are unsure about an implementation decision. It requires a Gemini API key.
Why use it?
It provides a separate check for mistakes or missed improvements that the original author may overlook.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00021 $0.00724
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00362
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00145
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00072

Security

Grade B, and why

self-critique scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (gemini_critique.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 86 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Self-Critique Skill

Implements the "confessions" pattern: after completing work, an independent model (Gemini) reviews it, so the author model's blind spots don't go unchallenged. The reviewer returns structured issues (category, severity, location, suggested fix) and an overall confidence score.

When to Use

  • After completing a significant code change
  • Before committing to version control
  • When uncertain about an implementation decision
  • As a periodic audit pass over recent work

Setup (one-time)

  1. Get a Gemini API key from https://aistudio.google.com/apikey
  2. Store it:
    mkdir -p ~/.config/ai-dev-tools
    echo "your-api-key-here" > ~/.config/ai-dev-tools/gemini_api_key
    chmod 600 ~/.config/ai-dev-tools/gemini_api_key

Or set the GEMINI_API_KEY environment variable.
  3. Optional: override the reviewer model with GEMINI_MODEL (pin exact model IDs — floating aliases can silently change behavior).

How to Use

Paths resolve against your ai-dev-tools checkout (see the AI_DEV_TOOLS_DIR convention in skills/README.md).

After completing a task, run the critique script with a description of what was done:

python3 "${AI_DEV_TOOLS_DIR:-.}/skills/self-critique/gemini_critique.py" \
--task "Implemented user authentication" --files src/auth.py src/middleware.py

Or for a git-based review of recent changes:

python3 "${AI_DEV_TOOLS_DIR:-.}/skills/self-critique/gemini_critique.py" \
  --git-diff HEAD~1 --task "Recent changes"

Focus the critique on one dimension:

python3 "${AI_DEV_TOOLS_DIR:-.}/skills/self-critique/gemini_critique.py" \
--task "Caching layer" --files cache.py --focus security

Add --json for machine-readable output. The script exits non-zero if any critical-severity issue is found, so it can gate CI or pre-commit flows.

Critique Categories

  1. Correctness - Logic errors, edge cases, off-by-one errors
  2. Security - Vulnerabilities, injection risks, data exposure
  3. Performance - Inefficiencies, N+1 queries, memory leaks
  4. Maintainability - Code clarity, naming, documentation gaps
  5. Completeness - Missing tests, error handling, validation

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

self-critique is a skill published in the GitHub repository dmoskov/sharedskills (2 stars, last pushed 14d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 21 tokens to every session and 724 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks for root). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
