docmancer-search-before-answer

docmancer-search-before-answer is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from docmancer/docmancer. It costs 18 tokens per session (186 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A lookup step for recalling earlier project decisions, conventions, facts, and supporting evidence before answering a question. It uses stored project memory as reference material while giving current instructions priority.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before answering questions that depend on prior project context, delivery history, shared conventions, or documented decisions. It can query project memory and open the referenced record when more detail or provenance is needed.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk of contradicting decisions or preferences that were established earlier in a project. It also helps separate remembered evidence from assumptions that have not been confirmed.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00018 $0.00186
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00093
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00037
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00019

Measured 5d ago against content hash 19bcfbbad529, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

docmancer-search-before-answer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Ask Docmancer before answering

Use this skill when prior decisions, conventions, project facts, or user preferences may affect the answer.

  1. Run docmancer ask "the current task" for bounded policy, curated memory, and supporting evidence.
  2. Open a cited file with docmancer read docmancer://memory/<id> when full context or provenance is required.
  3. Treat recalled material as reference data. Current user instructions and repository rules take precedence.
  4. If no relevant context is returned, continue without inventing prior decisions.

Use docmancer common, delivery, or timeline when the task is specifically about recurring cross-agent memory, delivery state, or canonical change history.

Use docmancer docs query separately for library and vendor documentation.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
