mental-models

mental-models is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from DorianSchlede/nexus-template. It costs 23 tokens per session (335 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill that applies structured thinking frameworks to decisions, problems, risks, and plans. These frameworks are named methods such as SWOT analysis or the five whys.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps choose and apply models for decisions, problem diagnosis, planning, and risk assessment.
Why use it?
It gives the agent a repeatable way to examine a situation instead of relying on unstructured discussion.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.00335
Opus 5 $0.00012 $0.00168
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00067
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00034

Security

Grade A, and why

mental-models scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Mental Models

Apply structured thinking frameworks to decisions, problems, and planning.

Workflow

Step 1: Run Scanner

uv run nexus-mental-models --format brief

Output shows slugs by category with path pattern:

# Path: 00-system/mental-models/models/{category}/{slug}.md
analytical: decision-matrix, swot-analysis, cost-benefit-analysis...
diagnostic: pre-mortem, five-whys, fishbone-diagram...

Step 2: Select & Load

Based on user's context, pick 1-2 models and load using the path pattern:

Read: 00-system/mental-models/models/diagnostic/pre-mortem.md

Step 3: Apply

Each model file contains purpose, questions, and process. Guide user through it.

Quick Reference

Situation Models
Decisions decision-matrix, inversion, cost-benefit-analysis
Problems first-principles, five-whys, fishbone-diagram
Planning pre-mortem, scenario-planning, stakeholder-mapping
Risk pre-mortem, inversion, margin-of-safety

Rules

  1. Run scanner first - don't guess slugs
  2. Use path pattern - models/{category}/{slug}.md
  3. Let user pick - suggest, don't impose
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
