find-simplifying-insight

find-simplifying-insight is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from douglance/sdlc-plugin. It costs 37 tokens per session (452 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A method for finding a simpler explanation when a project has accumulated many rules, exceptions, adapters, or workarounds.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to examine competing system models, expose assumptions and contradictions, propose falsifiable alternatives, and define a cheap test that could disprove them.
Why use it?
It separates observed facts from inherited machinery and tests whether one simpler model could remove unnecessary complexity.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00037 $0.00452
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.00226
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00090
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00045

Security

Grade A, and why

find-simplifying-insight scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Find Simplifying Insight

Look for the equivalent of a heliocentric shift: one model that explains the observations while making many inherited rules unnecessary. Treat elegance as a hypothesis, never as evidence, and do not force a revolution when the current model survives testing.

Method

  1. Separate observations from machinery. Inventory measured facts and invariants separately from inherited rules, exceptions, adapters, conventions, and workarounds.
  2. Expose the load-bearing assumptions. For each cluster of compensating rules, state the assumption they protect. Identify contradictions, repeated translations, and rules whose only justification is another rule.
  3. Form alternatives. Propose at most three simpler models plus the null hypothesis that the current model is necessary.
  4. Make each model falsifiable. For every candidate, state:
    • facts and invariants it preserves;
    • rules or exceptions it eliminates;
    • a novel prediction or observable consequence;
    • the cheapest decisive test that could disprove it.
  5. Run or specify the decisive test. Prefer executable probes, counterexamples, historical cases, or small spikes over argument from taste.
  6. Choose a verdict. Use exactly one: adopt, spike, reject, or no simplifying insight.

Guardrails

  • A shorter explanation that loses facts is not simpler; it is incomplete.
  • Moving complexity behind a new abstraction does not eliminate it.
  • Count migration cost, operational risk, and new failure modes.
  • Preserve the null hypothesis throughout the comparison.
  • If no candidate survives falsification, report that plainly and keep the existing model.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

find-simplifying-insight is a skill published in the GitHub repository douglance/sdlc-plugin (4 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 37 tokens to every session and 452 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
