monitoring-first

monitoring-first is a skill for Claude Code from dryvist/claude-code-plugins. It costs 14 tokens per session (418 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A monitoring procedure for checking the state of servers, virtual machines, containers, services, graphics processors, and storage through monitoring systems first.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to investigate system state, compare metrics and logs, find missing signals, restore data collection, and add alerts.
Why use it?
It reduces unnecessary shell access and helps prevent decisions based on missing or incomplete telemetry, meaning operational data collected from systems.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00014 $0.00418
Opus 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00167
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00003 $0.00084
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

monitoring-first scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 14d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Monitoring first

Use the monitoring stack to understand current state across hosts, guests, containers, services, GPUs, and storage. Start with the metrics store, log platform, and dashboards; use the source and time range that best answer the question, and compare signals when one source cannot establish the state.

Do not open a shell to perform routine state checks. A direct shell probe is for carrying out declared work, or a last resort when a required monitoring signal is missing. Keep that probe narrow, record the missing signal as a telemetry gap, and close the gap through the telemetry pipeline.

Close telemetry gaps

When a signal is absent, incomplete, or routed to the wrong place:

  1. Record which source, signal, or destination is missing and what decision it blocks.
  2. Restore collection through native telemetry sources and pipeline packs first. Use an exporter or script only when the native source and pipeline pack cannot provide the signal.
  3. Route the signal to every sink that needs it, including the metrics store, log platform, and dashboards where relevant.
  4. Add alerts where the signal needs alerting, using both delivery paths below.
  5. Verify collection and routing at each relevant sink before closing the gap.

Alert delivery

Keep the alert paths separate:

  • Send log-platform critical alerts only for actionable critical issues.
  • Send push notifications to chat for every issue, critical or non-critical.

Evidence

Support each system-state conclusion with the query or dashboard panel used. For a query, record the source, query, and time range; for a dashboard, name the dashboard and panel and record the selected time range. When reading logs, follow the log-platform rule for the log search procedure.

For concrete endpoints, dashboards, and sink routes, consult the private estate's Observability stack reference.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

monitoring-first is a skill published in the GitHub repository dryvist/claude-code-plugins (3 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 14 tokens to every session and 418 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-05.
