troubleshoot-precommit

A guide for diagnosing pre-commit hook failures and automatic file changes. Pre-commit hooks are checks that run before Git creates a commit.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review hook changes, stage corrected files, amend commits, and continue a rebase after hook-related failures.
Why use it?
It explains why Git stops when a hook formats or edits files, including during a rebase.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00018 $0.00573
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00287
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00115
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00057

Security

Grade A, and why

troubleshoot-precommit scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Pre-Commit Hook Troubleshooting

Diagnose and fix pre-commit hook issues that occur when committing code.

Error: Pre-Commit Hooks Modified Files

This error looks like:

trim trailing whitespace.................................................Passed
fix end of files.........................................................Passed
markdownlint-cli2........................................................Failed
- hook id: markdownlint-cli2
- files were modified by this hook

What happened: Pre-commit hooks auto-corrected formatting issues. The fixes weren't committed automatically.

Why This Happens

Pre-commit hooks run BEFORE your commit. If they auto-fix files, your staged changes no longer match your working directory. Git stops to let you review the changes.

Fix: Simple Case

Stage the auto-fixed files and amend the commit:

git add -A
git commit --amend --no-edit
git push origin <branch>

Fix: Continuing After Rebase

If this happens during a rebase operation:

# In the worktree where the rebase is running:
git add -A # stage the hook changes
git commit --amend --no-edit # update the current commit in the rebase
git rebase --continue # continue the rebase
# After the rebase finishes:
git push origin <branch> # push the rebased branch

Debugging: Hook Loop

If hooks keep modifying files in a loop:

git diff # See what changed
git diff HEAD~1 # See what the hook is trying to fix

Common Hooks and What They Fix

Hook Fixes
trim-trailing-whitespace Removes spaces at end of lines
end-of-file-fixer Ensures files end with newline
markdownlint-cli2 Fixes markdown formatting
prettier Reformats code/JSON/YAML
eslint with --fix Fixes JavaScript/TypeScript issues

DO NOT

  • Do NOT use git commit --no-verify to skip hooks
  • Do NOT force-push over hook auto-fixes
  • Do NOT assume the hook is wrong - it's usually a legitimate formatting issue

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

troubleshoot-precommit is a skill published in the GitHub repository dryvist/claude-code-plugins (3 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 573 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
