cobol-o-matic: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/run-analysis/SKILL.md

run-analysis is a skill for Claude Code from dsheard/cobol-o-matic. It costs 51 tokens per session (1,407 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for operating a tool that reverse-engineers COBOL source code, meaning it examines older programs to explain their structure and behaviour. It covers creating a workspace, splitting large programs into chunks, and running analysis.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to initialise a workspace, stage large programs, analyse one program or all programs, and choose analysis strategies or workers.
Why use it?
It provides the required setup, commands, options, and prerequisites needed to analyse COBOL reliably.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.01407
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00704
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00281
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00141

Security

Grade A, and why

run-analysis scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Running the Analysis Tool

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+
  • pip install -r requirements.txt (claude-agent-sdk, pyyaml, python-dotenv)
  • ANTHROPIC_API_KEY env var (direct API) or ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL + ANTHROPIC_API_KEY (AI gateway)

Commands

init -- Scaffold a Workspace

python analyse.py init
python analyse.py init --workspace /path/to/workspace

Creates workspace/ with config.yaml, CLAUDE.md, source/, output/ subdirectories. After init, edit config.yaml to point at your COBOL source files.

stage -- Pre-chunk Large Programs

python analyse.py stage # stage all programs
python analyse.py stage --program COACTUPC # stage one program
python analyse.py stage --chunk-threshold 600 # override line threshold

Deterministically splits programs exceeding chunk_threshold lines into paragraph-grouped chunks in staging/. The run command auto-stages, so explicit staging is only needed for inspection or custom thresholds.

run -- Execute Analysis

python analyse.py run # auto-strategy (recommended)
python analyse.py run --program ACCT0100 # single program
python analyse.py run --workers inventory, flow # specific workers only
python analyse.py run --dry-run # report without writing files
python analyse.py run --resume # continue a failed run
python analyse.py run --verbose # debug logging
python analyse.py run --workspace /path/to/ws # explicit workspace path

Run Strategies

The strategy setting in config.yaml (or auto-detected) controls the workflow:

Programs Auto Strategy Behaviour
1-10 default All workers in a single session, multi-iteration convergence
11+ phased Phase 1-5: cross-cutting -> per-program sweep -> synthesis -> tests -> impl plan

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

run-analysis is a skill published in the GitHub repository dsheard/cobol-o-matic (5 stars, last pushed 5mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 1,407 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
