xml-comparator

xml-comparator is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from EE-WILL-I/simple-data-comparator-mcp. It costs 46 tokens per session (522 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A checker that compares two XML documents, a tagged text format used by some APIs and configuration files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Validating SOAP or REST responses, XML configuration, and expected document structure.
Why use it?
It reports differences in elements, attributes, values, and document structure in a readable path.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.00522
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.00261
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00104
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00052

Measured 5d ago against content hash 83a3242f2dc3, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

xml-comparator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

XML Comparator

Compare actual XML against an expected template using the validate-xml MCP tool (simple-data-comparator-mcp server).

Workflow

  1. Discover the tool — call GetMcpTools for the comparator MCP server, then invoke validate-xml.
  2. Prepare strings — pass full XML documents as plain strings in actual and template.
  3. Call the tool — no optional parameters.
  4. Check isError:
    • false → validation passed
    • true → parse difference lines and map paths back to elements/attributes
  5. Report element paths, attribute names, and expected vs actual values clearly.

Parameters

Parameter Required Purpose
actual yes XML string to validate
template yes Expected XML template string

Interpreting results

Pass: Validation passed.

Fail:

Validation failed.
Differences:
[value_mismatch] catalog.book[0].title: expected "A", got "B"
[missing_element] root.child: expected element is missing
[extra_element] root.unexpected: unexpected extra element
[type_mismatch] root: expected array, got object
[array_length] items: expected 2 items, got 3
[parse_error] ...

Paths use dot notation; repeated elements use [index]. Attributes are included in comparison.

Example call

{
  "actual": "<root><value>42</value></root>",
  "template": "<root><value>42</value></root>"
}

Rules

  • Pass the full XML fragment you want compared (envelope, body, or subtree — be consistent on both sides).
  • Whitespace inside text nodes may affect comparison — normalize formatting when comparing text-heavy XML.
  • Use validate-xml for XML — not validate-text or validate-json.
  • DOCTYPE and XML declarations are ignored during parsing.
  • On [parse_error], fix malformed XML before retrying.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
