token-check

token-check is a skill for Claude Code from egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer. It costs 66 tokens per session (501 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for estimating the size of text, files, and conversations in tokens, the small text units used by language models. It also explains how context limits and repeated conversation messages affect usage.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to estimate token use, judge whether content fits, understand repeated-message costs, and reduce large prompts or attachments.
Why use it?
It helps explain why a file or conversation may exceed a model's limit and identifies smaller inputs that can preserve the needed information.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00066 $0.00501
Opus 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00200
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00013 $0.00100
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00050

Security

Grade A, and why

token-check scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Token check

Give a quick, honest estimate and the cheapest way to get the same result. These are estimates; say so. Exact counts come from the API's token counter.

Estimate

  • English prose: about 4 characters per token, roughly 750 words per 1,000 tokens. A full page of text is 500–700 tokens.
  • Code, JSON, logs: about 3 characters per token.
  • Cyrillic, CJK and other non-Latin scripts: about 1.5–3 characters per token, so the same text costs noticeably more than in English.
  • Images: on the order of 1,500 tokens each at typical sizes. PDFs: the text, plus an image's worth for pages read as images.

Give a range (for example "about 18–24K tokens"), and compare it with the context window: 1M tokens on current Opus, Sonnet and Haiku 5.5 models, 200K on older Haiku.

Explain the real cost

In a conversation, everything already in it is re-sent with every new message. A 20K-token document pasted early is paid for again on each of the next 30 messages, about 600K tokens in total. That, not the first send, is what uses up limits.

Ways to cut it, cheapest first

  1. Send only the part that matters: the section, the function, the failing lines of a log.
  2. Strip what carries no meaning: minified code, base64, repeated log lines, boilerplate.
  3. Summarize a long document once, then continue from the summary.
  4. When a conversation is long, start fresh from a handoff (the fresh-start skill).
  5. In Claude Code: read files with offset/limit, let the context-optimizer scout subagent do wide exploration on Haiku, and run /cco-audit to see where a session's tokens actually went.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

token-check is a skill published in the GitHub repository egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer (116 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 66 tokens to every session and 501 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-17.
