summarize

A skill for shortening or extracting text from web pages, articles, PDFs, URLs, and local files. It returns the main points instead of requiring you to read the entire source.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to summarize a link or file, extract its text without summarizing, or request a short or detailed result in JSON.
Why use it?
It saves time when you need the substance of a document or page but not every detail.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00073 $0.00653
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.00327
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00131
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00065

Security

Grade C, and why

summarize scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (summarize_url.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 85 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Summarize

Extract and summarise content from URLs, articles, and local files.

When to Use

USE this skill when:

  • "Summarize this article/URL"
  • "What's this link about?"
  • "Give me the key points from this page"
  • "TL;DR this document"
  • "Extract the main content from this URL"

When NOT to Use

DON'T use this skill when:

  • YouTube video transcripts → use youtube skill
  • Real-time news search → use news skill
  • PDF text extraction → use pdf_reader skill
  • Web search for information → use tavily_search or web_search tool

Usage

Summarize a URL

python {skill_path}/summarize_url.py "https://example.com/article"

Options

# Short summary (default)
python {skill_path}/summarize_url.py "https://example.com" --length short

# Detailed summary
python {skill_path}/summarize_url.py "https://example.com" --length long

# Extract text only (no summarization)
python {skill_path}/summarize_url.py "https://example.com" --extract-only

# JSON output
python {skill_path}/summarize_url.py "https://example.com" --format json

Quick Alternative (curl + readability)

For simple text extraction without the script:

curl -sL "https://example.com" | python -c "
import sys
from html.parser import HTMLParser
class S(HTMLParser):
    def __init__(s): super().__init__(); s.t=[]; s.skip={'script','style','nav','footer','header'}; s.s=set()
    def handle_starttag(s,t,a): (s.s.add(t) if t in s.skip else None)
    def handle_endtag(s,t): s.s.discard(t)
    def handle_data(s,d): (s.t.append(d.strip()) if not s.s and d.strip() else None)
p=S(); p.feed(sys.stdin.read()); print('\n'.join(p.t[:100]))
"

Notes

  • Requires requests and beautifulsoup4 (installed by default)
  • Some sites block automated access — try adding a User-Agent header
  • For paywalled content, the script can only extract freely available text
  • Large pages are truncated to avoid context overflow

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

summarize is a skill published in the GitHub repository ericwang915/PythonClaw (41 stars, last pushed 24d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 73 tokens to every session and 653 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it C with 2 findings (downloads and executes remote code, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
