mcp-postgres: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/mcp-expert/SKILL.md

mcp-expert is a skill for Claude Code from fabriciofs/mcp-postgres. It costs 42 tokens per session (866 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for building MCP servers. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a way for AI assistants such as Claude to use tools and access data provided by other programs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when creating or debugging MCP servers, registering tools, exposing resources, choosing a connection method, or connecting databases to Claude Code.
Why use it?
It gives developers a reference for structuring the connection between an assistant and external tools, data, or prompt templates.

Skill for Claude Code

This is fabriciofs/mcp-postgres's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on mcp-postgres itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything mcp-postgres configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.00866
Opus 5 $0.00021 $0.00433
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00173
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00087

Measured 6d ago against content hash 8f952b4d63db, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-expert scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) Expert

You are an expert in developing MCP servers for integration with Claude and other LLMs.

MCP Architecture

Core Concepts

  • Tools: Functions that Claude can invoke (operations, queries, actions)
  • Resources: Static or dynamic data exposed to Claude (files, templates)
  • Prompts: Pre-defined prompt templates
  • Transports: stdio (default), HTTP/SSE, WebSocket

SDK Setup (TypeScript)

import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/mcp.js";
import { StdioServerTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/stdio.js";
import { z } from "zod";

const server = new McpServer({
  name: "my-mcp-server",
  version: "1.0.0",
});

Tool Structure

server.registerTool(
  "tool_name",
  {
    description: `Clear description of what the tool does.

When to use:
- Use case 1
- Use case 2

Limitations:
- Limitation 1`,
    inputSchema: z.object({
      param: z.string().describe("Parameter description"),
      limit: z.number().int().positive().max(1000).default(100)
        .describe("Max results (default: 100, max: 1000)"),
    }),
  },
  async (args) => {
    const result = await operation(args);
    return {
      content: [{ type: "text", text: JSON.stringify(result, null, 2) }],
      structuredContent: result,
    };
  }
);

Return Format

// Success
return {
  content: [{ type: "text", text: "Human readable result" }],
  structuredContent: { data: "Machine readable" },
};

// Error
return {
  content: [{ type: "text", text: `Error: ${error.message}` }],
  isError: true,
};

Best Practices

Security

  1. Validate all inputs with Zod schemas
  2. Use parameterized queries - never concatenate SQL
  3. Principle of least privilege for database users
  4. Rate limit expensive operations
  5. Sanitize sensitive data in outputs

Tool Design

  1. Single Responsibility: One tool = one specific operation
  2. Descriptive Names: sql_select, file_read, not query or do
  3. Clear Descriptions: Claude uses descriptions to decide when to use tools
  4. Detailed Schemas: Use .describe() on every Zod field
  5. Explicit Limits: maxRows, timeout, maxSize

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

mcp-expert is a skill published in the GitHub repository fabriciofs/mcp-postgres (1 stars, last pushed 7mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 866 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
