simplify

simplify is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from fcakyon/claude-codex-settings. It costs 97 tokens per session (910 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A code-cleanup review process for recently changed code. It looks for simpler structure, reusable logic, and unnecessary complexity, rather than searching for bugs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect a diff, find cleanup opportunities, apply improvements, and check the result.
Why use it?
It helps reduce clutter and awkward code before changes are committed, while keeping bug detection as a separate review task.

About the project

claude-codex-settings is a collection of configurations and reusable extensions for Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, and related coding tools. Developers use its skills, commands, hooks, agents, plugins, and MCP servers to shape coding-agent workflows and connect alternative model APIs. The catalogue entries are components of this collection that can be installed into supported coding tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00097 $0.00910
Opus 5 $0.00048 $0.00455
Sonnet 5 $0.00019 $0.00182
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00091

Security

Grade A, and why

simplify scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Simplify

/simplify → 4 cleanup agents in parallel → apply the fixes

You are improving the quality of the changed code, not hunting for bugs. Review it for reuse, simplification, efficiency, and altitude issues, then fix what you find. Do not look for correctness bugs, that is what /code-review is for.

Explicit commit bypass

If the user explicitly asks to commit while skipping simplify, skip the review phases below:

  1. State that simplify will be skipped for one commit and normal Git hooks will still run.
  2. Run this exact command from the worktree:
echo simplify-guard:bypass
  1. Commit normally without --no-verify.

Never infer permission to bypass from the size, urgency, or type of change. The user must explicitly name simplify when asking to skip it.

Phase 0 — Gather the diff

Run git diff @{upstream}...HEAD (or git diff main...HEAD / git diff HEAD~1 if there's no upstream) to get the unified diff under review. If there are uncommitted changes, or the range diff is empty, also run git diff HEAD and include the working-tree changes in scope, the review often runs before the commit. If a PR number, branch name, or file path was passed as an argument, review that target instead. Treat this diff as the review scope.

Phase 1 — Review (4 cleanup agents in parallel)

Run 4 distinct reviews, one for each angle below. Launch four independent agents concurrently when capacity allows. If fewer than four slots are available, run the remaining angles in the primary agent or in later waves. Never omit or combine an angle. Pass each agent the diff and its assigned angle. Each returns its findings with file, line, a one-line summary, and the concrete cost (what is duplicated, wasted, or harder to maintain).

Reuse

Flag new code that re-implements something the codebase already has. Grep shared/utility modules and files adjacent to the change, and name the existing helper to call instead.

Simplification

Flag unnecessary complexity the diff adds: redundant or derivable state, copy-paste with slight variation, deep nesting, dead code left behind. Name the simpler form that does the same job.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
