gemini-files-api

A managed connection to Google Gemini for sending local files such as audio, video, images, and PDFs along with prompts. It can return structured JSON responses and supports configurable model settings.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to analyze local files, make multimodal Gemini requests, run text-only checks, and receive machine-readable results from scripts.
Why use it?
It avoids building separate file-upload and authentication handling for each Gemini request. It also provides a documented way to keep API keys outside the skill directory.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00038 $0.00560
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00280
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00112
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00056

Measured 2d ago against content hash 4d966d3fe0c1, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

gemini-files-api scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 3 executable files (scripts/bootstrap.sh, scripts/gemini-mm.mjs, scripts/test_gemini_mm.mjs), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Gemini Files API

Purpose

Provide one managed wrapper for Gemini requests that need local audio, video, images, PDFs, or other supported files. This repository owns the wrapper source; installed Codex, OpenCode, Claude Code, and repo-local copies are consumer views.

Setup

Install dependencies once after the skill is installed or updated:

scripts/bootstrap.sh

The wrapper requires Node.js 20 or newer. Authentication is resolved in this order:

  1. GEMINI_API_KEY;
  2. GOOGLE_API_KEY;
  3. the macOS Keychain service named by GEMINI_KEYCHAIN_SERVICE, defaulting to gemini_api_key.

Do not store API keys in this skill directory.

Canonical Commands

Run a text-only smoke request:

node scripts/gemini-mm.mjs --prompt "Reply with exactly: OK"

Requests default to the stable gemini-3.5-flash model. Use --model for one request or GEMINI_MODEL for a local default; dependent skills may select a separate reviewed model for their own workflow.

Analyze a local file and return the response envelope used by dependent skills:

node scripts/gemini-mm.mjs \
  --file path/to/input.m4a \
--prompt "Transcribe the spoken audio." \
  --json

Use node scripts/gemini-mm.mjs --help for model, sampling, token, schema, tool, upload-retention, and file options.

Packaging Rules

  • node_modules is never committed or copied as source.
  • scripts/package-lock.json is the reviewed dependency pin.
  • scripts/bootstrap.sh recreates dependencies with npm ci --ignore-scripts so reviewed packages cannot execute lifecycle scripts during setup.
  • Uploaded Gemini Files API objects are deleted after each run unless --keep-files is explicitly passed.
  • node scripts/test_gemini_mm.mjs locks the reviewed default and quota hint and verifies that SIGINT and SIGTERM wait for uploaded-file cleanup before the wrapper exits.
  • Consumer copies must be refreshed through the pinned skills manager; do not edit installed copies by hand.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

gemini-files-api is a skill published in the GitHub repository fiveonecode/agent-skills (19 stars, last pushed 10d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 560 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
