agent-operator-codex-setup

A setup and troubleshooting skill for the Agent Operator marketplace in Codex, the coding-agent application. A marketplace is a catalogue from which you can discover and install add-ons.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to register or upgrade the marketplace, diagnose a local checkout, verify discovery, and check configuration without replacing unrelated settings.
Why use it?
It reduces guesswork when registering, updating, or checking whether the marketplace and its add-ons are available.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00073 $0.00395
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.00198
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00079
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00040

Measured yesterday against content hash f5101587281b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-operator-codex-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Agent Operator Codex Setup

Use native Codex marketplace commands first. Do not manually edit user configuration when the supported command can perform the operation.

Install

  1. Confirm that git and codex are available.

  2. Register the marketplace:

codex plugin marketplace add [email protected]:gabonio/agent-operator-toolkit.git

  3. Restart Codex if the marketplace does not appear immediately.

  4. Open /plugins, select Agent Operator, and install only the plugins the user wants.

  5. Start a new task after installation so it loads the new skill instructions.

Update

  1. Discover the registered marketplace name instead of guessing it.
  2. Run codex plugin marketplace upgrade <marketplace-name>.
  3. Restart Codex or start a new task when cached skill instructions remain active.
  4. Run the doctor after an update if discovery or versions still look wrong.

Diagnose

From this plugin root, run:

python3 scripts/doctor.py --client codex

Pass --marketplace-root <path> when diagnosing a specific checkout. The doctor is read-only.

Boundaries

  • Preserve unrelated marketplaces, plugins, agents, hooks, MCP servers, and Codex configuration.
  • Do not add startup hooks or background update behavior without explicit permission.
  • Do not claim an update is active in the current task; cached instructions may require a new task.
  • Ask before deleting caches, replacing checkouts, or modifying user-scoped files.
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

agent-operator-codex-setup is a skill published in the GitHub repository gabonio/agent-operator-toolkit (1 stars, last pushed 28d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 73 tokens to every session and 395 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
