pi-playbook

pi-playbook is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from gaia-research/gaia-skill-heaven. It costs 59 tokens per session (1,627 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for using the pi command-line tool as a test target or delegated worker. It covers how to run probes, choose models, and start pi agents without interactive prompts.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to run pi benchmarks, compare pi configurations, launch pi-zero, select models, and dispatch tasks to pi agents.
Why use it?
It helps when you need repeatable pi runs or want to compare how different setups behave. It also explains the command options needed to hand work to another pi agent.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00059 $0.01627
Opus 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00651
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00325
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00163

Security

Grade A, and why

pi-playbook scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

pi Playbook

pi is a coding agent CLI with a flag surface that maps unusually cleanly onto Skill Heaven's mechanisms — it can evict and readmit skills natively, so postures compose without any config-directory tricks.

Verified against pi 0.83.0. Re-check pi --version before trusting any dose measurement; a flag's behaviour has changed across versions before (see §5).

Rule 0 — run pi in a herdr pane, never through your Bash tool. The operator must be able to see which model you invoked. A probe the operator could not see is not evidence. Use pane send-text with a trailing newline inside the quotes — not pane run, which splits argv on whitespace and destroys quoted prompts:

herdr pane send-text "$PROBE_PANE" 'pi --model openai-codex/gpt-5.6-luna:low -p --no-session "probe text"
'
herdr pane read "$PROBE_PANE"

Building the door? Read packages/core/skills/harness-door-pattern/SKILL.md first — it carries the suppression-mechanism taxonomy, the probe methodology, and the traps. This playbook is the harness-specific detail underneath it.

1. Model selection

pi --list-models # all models
pi --list-models luna # fuzzy search

Models are addressed as provider/id, with an optional :thinking suffix:

pi --model openai-codex/gpt-5.6-luna:low "..."
pi --model openai-codex/gpt-5.6-luna:max "..."

Session guinea pig: openai-codex/gpt-5.6-luna:low ("Luna Light") — use it for probes and high-volume runs. :max ("Luna Max") is the heavier tier for coding work.

Thinking levels: off, minimal, low, medium, high, xhigh, max — settable inline as :level or via --thinking <level>.

2. Non-interactive invocation

pi -p --no-session "your prompt"
  • -p / --print — process the prompt and exit.
  • --no-session — do not persist a session file. Always use this for probes, otherwise probe runs accumulate as session state and pollute later comparisons.
  • --mode json — structured output for machine consumption.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

pi-playbook is a skill published in the GitHub repository gaia-research/gaia-skill-heaven (4 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 59 tokens to every session and 1,627 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
