principal-engineering-review

principal-engineering-review is a skill for Codex from GalaxyRuler/Galactic-skills. It costs 87 tokens per session (873 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for investigating a software repository before designing, changing, reviewing, securing, or optimizing production code. It emphasizes checking the real files, conventions, dependencies, and verification commands first.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps with architecture reviews, feature work, refactoring, APIs, database migrations, CI/CD, deployment hardening, security reviews, and performance work.
Why use it?
It reduces mistakes caused by assuming the framework, architecture, database, deployment setup, or test process.

Skill for Codex

Written for Codex: agents/openai.yaml present. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions AGENTS.md; mentions Gemini CLI.

Good fit It helps with architecture reviews, feature work, refactoring, APIs, database migrations, CI/CD, deployment hardening, security reviews, and performance work.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00087 $0.00873
Opus 5.5 $0.00035 $0.00349
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00175
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00087

Security

Grade A, and why

principal-engineering-review scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Principal Engineering Review

Core Principle

Treat the agent as executor and the human as supervisor. Verify the real repository before making meaningful claims or changes, then make the smallest coherent change that moves the system toward production quality.

Do not assume architecture, framework, package manager, test commands, deployment model, database shape, or repo conventions. Confirm them from files or commands first.

Standard Workflow

For non-trivial work, proceed in this order:

  1. Discover the repository.
  2. Frame the problem.
  3. Plan the change.
  4. Implement the smallest safe slice.
  5. Verify with the strongest available checks.
  6. Report changes, evidence, risks, and follow-up.

Stop and ask only when the change requires deleting data, rotating secrets, changing public API behavior, choosing between major product directions, or when unrelated failures block safe progress.

Discovery Checklist

Before architecture advice or code changes, inspect the relevant subset of:

  • AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, GEMINI.md, README, docs, and repo instructions.
  • Folder structure and application boundaries.
  • Package manager files and scripts.
  • Framework conventions and frontend/backend entrypoints.
  • Build, lint, typecheck, test, and smoke-test commands.
  • Existing state management, API patterns, and error handling.
  • Database schema, migrations, seed data, and ORM/query layer.
  • Deployment, CI/CD, infrastructure, and environment config.
  • Security-sensitive surfaces: auth, secrets, CORS, webhooks, uploads, logging, and external calls.

If something remains unknown, state what is unknown and which file or command would confirm it.

Problem Framing

Before editing, restate briefly:

  • User goal.
  • Affected components.
  • Likely correctness, security, performance, migration, or delivery risks.
  • Assumptions.
  • Verification criteria.

Ask only essential clarifying questions. Otherwise proceed with labeled assumptions.

Planning Rules

Use a concise plan for non-trivial work:

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
