gemini-image

gemini-image is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from gopherguides/gopher-ai. It costs 84 tokens per session (1,282 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An image-generation tool that uses Google's Gemini API to create or edit pictures in several sizes and quality levels. An API is a way for software to request work from another service.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to generate or edit images such as photos, illustrations, banners, logos, icons, thumbnails, and website headers.
Why use it?
It gives a coding agent a documented path for producing image assets when the required Google API key and Python 3 are available.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00084 $0.01282
Opus 5 $0.00042 $0.00641
Sonnet 5 $0.00017 $0.00256
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00128

Measured 5d ago against content hash 7c75d2745f73, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

gemini-image scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Gemini Image Generation

You detected an image generation request. Confirm intent before proceeding.

Say: "It sounds like you want to generate an image. I can do that using the Gemini API. Let me walk you through the options."

If the user confirms, proceed. If not, stop.

Tip: You can also use /gemini-image <description> to generate images directly.

1. Check Prerequisites

echo "GEMINI_API_KEY set: $([ -n "$GEMINI_API_KEY" ] && echo 'yes' || echo 'no')"
which python3

If GEMINI_API_KEY is not set:

GEMINI_API_KEY is not set. Get one free at https://aistudio.google.com/apikey Then export it: export GEMINI_API_KEY="your-key-here"

Stop and wait for the user to set the key. If python3 is missing, inform the user Python 3 is required.

Note: The Gemini CLI's Nano Banana extension was investigated as an alternative generation path, but it has a known MCP tool registration bug (Gemini CLI v0.34.0 / Nano Banana v1.0.12). The REST API is the only reliable path right now.

2. Gather Image Details

Extract the image description from the user's request and confirm it. Then collect (ask the user or infer from context):

  • Model — pick from the model table in reference.md (it lists the current default and trade-offs)
  • Aspect ratio — infer from "banner"/"avatar"/"vertical"/etc., default 1:1
  • Resolution1K default; model-specific alternatives are listed in reference.md
  • Reference image — optional path to an existing file
  • Output path — auto-generate a descriptive filename in CWD if not given

Do not prompt for a service tier. If the user explicitly requests one, use the model support matrix in reference.md; omit unsupported settings.

For full option matrices, model trade-offs, the aspect-ratio inference table, and service-tier support — Read reference.md.

Export the gathered values as environment variables. Always single-quote user-provided values to prevent shell injection (quotes, backticks, $):

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

gemini-image is a skill published in the GitHub repository gopherguides/gopher-ai (21 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 84 tokens to every session and 1,282 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
