system.analyze_disk_space_use

system.analyze_disk_space_use is a skill for Claude Code from gpsaggese/helpers. It costs 12 tokens per session (1,434 once invoked), scanned C, original, Apache-2.0.

A read-only disk-usage analysis procedure for finding the largest users of storage and possible reclaimable space. It checks volumes, home directories, caches, logs, and container or virtual-machine data.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect free space, locate large files or directories, review container storage, and identify cleanup candidates.
Why use it?
It helps explain why a machine is running out of disk space without deleting anything. Findings are measured and ranked for later review.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00012 $0.01434
Opus 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00574
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00002 $0.00287
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00143

Security

Grade C, and why

system.analyze_disk_space_use scanned grade C with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Recursive force deletehighDestructive command

rm -rf with a variable or a broad path is one typo away from removing the wrong tree.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 133 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Goal

  • Find what consumes the most disk space. Identify what is safely reclaimable (unused container/VM images, caches, logs) and what needs manual review
  • Never delete, move, or modify anything. Analysis only

Workflow

Check Overall Disk Usage

  • Run df -h to see total, used, and available space per volume
  • On macOS, user data lives on /System/Volumes/Data, not /. Use its Capacity/Avail columns to judge urgency

Survey the Home Directory

  • List top-level home directory usage, largest first:

    > du -sh ~/* 2>/dev/null | sort -rh

  • Recurse one level at a time into the dominant directory (on macOS, often ~/Library), sorting by size, until you reach the actual large items:

    > /usr/bin/du -sh ~/Library/* 2>/dev/null | sort -rh | head -30

  • Track every directory measured. They feed the top-10 list in "Rank Findings And Write The Report"

Check Container and VM Engines First

  • Container and VM engines are usually the biggest consumer on a dev machine. They cache every pulled or built image and rarely self-prune
  • For each installed engine, check its usage report before raw directory sizes:
    • Docker: if docker exists, run docker system df -v for a per-image and per-volume breakdown. Images with CONTAINERS = 0 are unused and reclaimable
    • Apple container CLI (native macOS containers): if container exists, run container system df. Its data lives under ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.container. Docker's VM disk lives under ~/Library/Containers/com.docker.docker
    • Other engines (podman, colima, lima, nerdctl): use their equivalent system df / usage-report command
  • The tool can report a builder container (Docker buildx state volume, Apple buildkit builder) as "active", which excludes it from RECLAIMABLE even when it is very large
    • Size it with /usr/bin/du -sh <PATH>. Report it as a manual candidate, with the reset command (docker buildx prune --all, or container builder stop && container builder delete)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

system.analyze_disk_space_use is a skill published in the GitHub repository gpsaggese/helpers (158 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 12 tokens to every session and 1,434 once invoked, about $0.0000 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it C with 1 finding (recursive force delete). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-06.
